Historical Traveler Reviews of Hawaiiana Hotel Honolulu Oahu
This is NOT what I call a vacation~

Cinder block walls, stained industrial carpet, window air conditioning units, peeling paint... this place seems like it used to be a tenement.
It's horrribly sad and depressing. The grounds are nice, the lobby is nice, but the rooms are just sad.
A great alternative to the high-rises

My family recently returned from a trip to visit family on Oahu. We stayed one week at the Hawaiiana (our second stay in two years) and it was like coming home. The grounds and gardens are really beautiful and give a quiet, secluded, private feel despite the busy Waikiki location.
The buildings are no higher than 2-3 stories. It's so nice to be able to just open the door and be outside rather than hassle with elevators, lobbies, etc. Our two boys, ages 3 and 8, loved it. The rooms are comfortable and tastefully decorated, although nothing fancy. The carpets are a little worn, but the housekeeping was excellent. The two pools are small but adequate. Our kids used them daily. The beach is one long block away-- a five-minute walk. The Hawaiiana is a great deal for the money and we will definitely stay there again.

Stayed at the Hawaiiana in 1999. Had booked a 'suite' which turned out to be a very narrow bedroom with a sink and a microwave. The AC did not work, the door to the lanai would not shut and the desk personnel were less than responsive.
Luckily we only neede to stay there 4 nights.
Hawaiiana - my home away from home

Once finding the Hawaiiana it is hard for me to stay any place else. I walk though other hotels and am so happy to know where my home is. In 1997 my last time of many times being there I was thrilled to be poolside and watch authentic hula dancing without the commercialism. I also like the fact my room had a small refrigerator to keep my fruit and milk fresh for my cereal each morning. I am hoping to make it back sooner than later.Katie G

The Hawaiiana is Hawaii at it's Best. Perfectly located in the heart of Waikiki. The Hawaiiana is a clean, comfortable, old-fashioned hotel.
The staff is friendly. The gardens and pool a pleasant retreat after a day of shopping and sightseeing!

I feel as though I stumbled upon a real gem when I found out about the Hawaiiana Hotel in Waikiki. It is an older property but kept immaculate and is the only place I'd want to stay in Waikiki from now on. Although it is older, it is simply beautiful and serene. The grounds have grassy areas, plants and flowers everywhere, two pools and a lovely open air lobby and front desk. The staff was full of the aloha spirit and always eager to help whenever asked. Yes, the rooms and the furniture are dated, but they were more than sufficient and everything worked properly. The room included a kitchenette with a two burner electric stove, microwave, small frig, coffee maker, toaster and all necessary dishes and utensils. The kitchenette was a star feature for me since I love to cook and was on a tight budget. A bus trip to the grocery store saved me oodles on the price of meals. There are even barbequs available if you want to use them. The morning juice and coffee by the pool was not to be missed - I didn't miss one day - I enjoyed starting my day off visiting with other guests or just lounging by the pool listening to the birds. The pineapple they brought to my room after I checked in was delicious. The fact that the front desk staff took a personal interest in me - they knew my name and were very friendly, saying hello to me every time they saw me - made it feel very nice to be there. My boyfriend lives in Hawaii, so I anticipate more trips to come in the future, all of which I will spend as a guest of the Hawaiiana. Oh yeah - I got all this for $400 per week! Imagine that, and being a block from the beach was amazing. The little street this hotel is nestled on is pretty neat itself and I was right in the middle of everything and could easily get anywhere in Waikiki without any hassle at all. The worst part of the trip was leaving, which was really tough. Only knowing I'll be back - hopefully in the spring - made it bearable at all.
A Bit of Paradise

We stayed in The Hawaiiana for a week in January, 2003. After a fifteen day tour of the Islands. My wife and I enjoyed the Hawaiiana immensely. We had a front pool side room. The rooms are dated but the grounds and location make up for it. Of all the hotel we stayed in on our tour, ( there where six). This was the most pleasant. The staff went out of their way to help us any time of the day and night. We rate it above average because of price, staff, and grounds. We will certainly return. The Caps

We stayed in the Hawaiiana in 1997. Had a great poolside room, we BBQd by the pool. The staff was wonderful and Very accomadating. Would stay there again, and refer it as well. I also liked the fact that it is only 2 story- no elevators. It is close to everything, yet tucked away in privacy. Aloha!

This was our first visit to Oahu in 8 years. We usually go to Maui twice a year and were initially thrilled to find this little piece of heaven in the midst of Waikiki. That feeling abated soon after we checked in. We reserved two rooms and were given two that couldn't have been further apart. But this is a small hotel so that wasn't too difficult to accept. Our room was on the first level by the pool. Despite the fact that we had been promised a room with a King and a twin, we wound up with two doubles, and one felt like it was two stacked box springs. The louvers on the windows would not close, the floor was damp and smelled of mold, and there was a one inch strip of rust next to the bathroom sink with slime on the shower floor. The other room was better, with a lanai and the promised bed configuration. We spent more time outside and touring, and very little time in the room so most of our stay was pleasant despite the accomodations until check-out when I had to fight to get the $20 deposit for the parking deposit pass back because I didn't have a receipt. I didn't know that I was supposed to get one and argued that I wouldn't have had the plastic pass to turn back in if I hadn't handed over $20 at check in! I was told that the cash wasn't $20 over on the date that we checked in and that the desk clerk couldn't trust every guest that said they paid money when they didn't. This took about 10 minutes to straighten out this mess and to check out, while the rest of my party was holding the back gate open waiting for me. I did take the time to send an e-mail about our experience to the individual at the hotel who had been so charming when we were making our reservations but never got a response. During our stay, we chatted with several others who have stayed there for years and some said that it was definitely going downhill and that rooms were hit and miss. So if you want a bargain in a great location and want to take your chances on the quality of the room and potentially poor treatm won't return. And the promised Sunday entertainment was stopped over a year ago...
A Wonderful Two Weeks

What a wonderful find. After visting Hawaii for three years in a row, we have finally found a hotel that is a delight to stay in.
While the Hawaianna is slightly tired, the charm of the property outways any lack of modern amenities. We took an Ali Deluxe Suite for 14 days. The romm was tired in terms of furniture and accessories, but it was large and had a wonderful lani overlooking the pool.
The staff are very friendly and helpful and went out of their way to make you feel at home. The Hawaiiana offers a great location and even with the weak Australian dollar was good value.
I llok forward to staying there again next year.
