Jodhpur, the Blue City

Even though we've only done it once, I've got used to showing up at new places, picking a random guest house from the Bible (aka the Lonely Planet) and getting a rickshaw driver to take us there. Our arrival in Jodhpur was no different, and we found ourselves in the Haveli guest house, right in the heart of the Old Town, at 11.30 last night with a room that is costing us 800 rupees. Ted was hoping to have got something cheaper, but it's in a really old building, with a view of the fort so we ...

Its only 108 degrees in Jodhpur

We finished our time in Jaipur and had our tickets in hand for the bus ride to Jodhpur. We took a rickshaw to the bus station. He stopped and said we were at the bus station. The facade of the bus station reminded me of a run down movie theatre in one of the decrepit parts of an aging downtown back home. Except that there were cows, pigs, raw sewage and the smell of urine everywhere. I couldn't believe that this structure housed the bus terminal, but it did. We went in and started the dance o...

On the Road to Jodhpur

Along the way to Jodhpur we stopped at a brick making facility. It is actually a family of brick makers that made the bricks by hand and laid them out to dry, then baked them. I'd seen a number of these from the bus to Udaipur so it was nice to be able to stop and see how they did everything. We saw herds of camels and oxen along the way. I beieve they are all owed by someone, but they were wandering free along the road or in the fields. We stopped at Ranakpur Temple which is a Jain temple ma...

The Blue City

24th - Arrived at 5.45am (!!!!) and waded through the usual sea of bodies in the half light. We headed for the Haveli Guest House (Haveli means ornate residence) and thankfully they were awake and amenable to showing us their last room. It was over 250 years old and full of character with a seperate curtained off sleeping area so we crashed there for a couple of hours before we checked in and met the staff. They were all so nice and explained the latest scams and gave us their number in cse a...

Back to Medieval Times

We just arrive in Jodhpur a couple hours ago, and we are meeting again in a half hour. The 6 hour bus ride was not as bad as I had expected; actually, it was not too bad at all. I was afraid of a stinky person standing next to me the whole trip, but that did not happen until the last hour. It was a pretty neat ride, as there we passed village after village and saw a lot of interesting scenery. I brought my iPod and have The DaVinci Code on audibook, but I have yet to make it past the first ch...

Day 8: Jaisalmer to Jodhpur

Before sunrise, I'm woken by the grunt of a camel and the buzzing of flies. The sand between our beds is patterned with the footsteps of dung beetles. Several are fighting over the balls of camel droppings left behind in the night. The return camel ride takes in no extra sights. The base of my spine is now sore. There's just enough time back in Jaisalmer for us to shower and lunch before boarding the local bus to Jodhpur. The distance is about 298km. It promises to take up to six hours. The b...

Jodhpur and it's fort

Some of the most exciting parts of this journey have been the journeying! We've done it all now. The camel safari from Jaisalmer was excellent fun. Riding a camel is similar to riding a horse, except it's slowler, bumpier, smellier and less secure. My delightfully stinky camel was Raj, one of the largest camels of the lot. We rode for about an our and a half into the Thar Desert and then camped for the night under the stars. Ah yes, real stars. I ...

Holed up in Jodphur

... hotel. So we had a car come and pick us up. I got sick two more times before we got back to jodphur. It was quite an experience because anybody who was around just had to stop and stare. Kids laughed and pointed. Oh, I felt wonderful. I got back to the hotel and I pretty much went comatose. We decided we would try for the two oclock bus to udaipur the next day, as we had planned. But of course 2 came the next day and I couldn't make it, so ...

India Part 8: Jodhpur

... chatted endlessly about going to University in the UK and what films he loved. I think the owners were being really polite and waiting for us to leave the table but we were being polite and waiting for them to leave the table so we all sat there at times not saying anything just fiddling with our napkin or whatever!! We invited them for a game of scrabble or cards and they shook their heads, No, vigorously as if we had invited them to play strip poker ...

On the road from Jaisalmer to Jodhpur

... women workers, balancing large metal bowls on their heads to collect dirt, rocks and twigs for building with (or twigs for firewood). Most of the women villagers will collect water in large pots on their heads and well as building materials, and some families will collect long branches as tall as themselves balanced on their heads. We continued on to Jodhpur, arriving around 4:30 pm. Before arriving back at the Krishna ...
