Day 3: On the road again

Today was our last day in Salzburg. Neither of us were hungry for breakfast after last nights feast, so we headed 20 minutes outside of town to Schloss (castle) Hellbrunn. This "small" castle was built in 1613 & named for the clear spring water that supplied it. It was meant only to be used as a day residence for the Austrian archbishop - so there are no bedrooms in the palace. The main attraction of this palace, however, are the ...

Today was a pretty early morning. I was up and out the door before 8, and headed downstairs to the corner bakery to get a cup of tea. From there I headed to the Royal Palace and it's surrounding park right across the street. I figured I'd have a nice morning cup of tea with a walk through the park and end at the Royal Palace to watch the sunrise (which wasn't supposed to happen until a little after 8). It was a great plan, and I did my part to make it work, but ...

At several points it was barely paved and shrank down to a single lane for both directions as it snaked through the countryside and eventually the woods. Eventually it lead us to a lake cut out of the side of a mountain and eventually a tunnel through that mountain ...

Driving from Munich to Salzburg gave us a "taste" of the beauty that awaits us in Bavaria and Switzerland, as we passed numerous small towns nestled in the rolling hills of the lower Tyrolean Alps. Oh, did I say "taste"? Maybe that was a psychological slip, because really Salzburg has been one wonderful gastronomic "taste" after another, as the pictures show.
Arriving here Tuesday afternoon, we unpacked at our charming pension, and ...

Sound of Music Scavenger Hunt Pt 1.

... 45 minute tour, Cheryl and I wandered back up the hill. The last stop of the day had nothing to do with the Sound of Music (shocking I know). I wanted to visit the Fortress of Salzburg so we took the tram up the hill and took 30 minute audio tour of the fortress.

The Fortress of Salzburg dates back 900 years, the fortress was never conquered and stands as one of the only fully intact fortresses in Europe. The view from the top was magnificent. You could literally see the ...
