Z Jerevanu jsme se vykopali kvuli vcerejsi navsteve hospody az kolem druhe hodiny, kdy se nam podarilo najit misto, odkud vyjizdi marsrutky k jezeru Sevan. Byl to ten nejmensi mozny minibus, to ale nic nemenilo na tom, ze se do nej veslo vic lidi nez sedacek, a to dokonce s nasemi velkymi bagly. Urovnavani lidi a zavazadel do minibusu obstaraval jisty deda, ktery neustale chtel neco prerovnavat a jehoz nejcastejsi pokyn znel "Sn&#283 ...

Why I Don't Swim

So I've left Stepanakart, spent a night in Yerevan, and now I'm in the town of Vanadzor. I think either tomorrow or the day after I will move on to Tbilisi. The night before I left Stepanakart, the family who owned the hostel was having a party for their 3 month old granddaughter and invited me upstairs for dinner. I had already eaten, and then was continually stuffed anew by the grandmom, Ella. The family was nice to chat with, and the food was very good (and all ...

Tenth Century Monasteries of Debed Canyon

The marshrutka from Sevan descended from the highlands around Lake Sevan into forested mountains and valleys, leaving the white snowstorm behind. On the way, we passed small towns and switchbacked down thousands of feet, stopping at the Vanadzor bus station. From Vanadzor, I took a bus north through Debed Canyon to the mining town of Alaverdi. Perched above the canyon were the towns of Haghpat and Sanahin, each with their tenth century monasteries. In Haghpat, the sun ...

Sevan was a quick bus trip from Yerevan, a small industrial town now a summer resort, where people from Yerevan go to enjoy the cooler mountain air and blue waters of Lake Sevan, at over 6,000 feet. This time of year, I could only see the closed resorts, empty swimming pools, and frozen lake. A whitewash of clouds hovered above the lake, along with bitter cold. Walking around, I finally found a small place open for the winter, a roadside motel ...

Around Yerevan, part III: Elections, Monastery

Everywhere I went, I poked around monasteries and churches looking for centuries-old khatchkars outside and lighting candles inside. Most churches and khatchkars in Armenia, it seems, date from between the seventh and fourteenth centuries, after the Arabs were expelled and before Tamerlane pillaged the lands, although a few are older and many are more recent, or at least more-recently redesigned, restored, or repainted. Many of them are also ...

Around Yerevan, part II: Khatchkars and Chats

Armenia was the first state to become Christian, when St. Gregory the Illuminator converted King Tiridates the Third in 301 A.D. I visited the site where St. Gregory had his holy vision, now the Mother Church of Armenia, at Echmiadzin, the holy seat of the Armenian Catholicos. Here people came to pray, kissing pictures of saints, Jesus, and the Virgin Mary with passion, lighting candles, and sitting in contemplation. Bearded monks walked amongst the people; rich and ...

Silk Road Sojourn

My group of eight, consisting of six technical people and two drivers in twin NJivas travelled South into the mountainous and remote Syunik province of Armenia, right up to its border with Iran. We are trying to inspect the most remote and alpine reservoir site before the snows of January close us out completely ...

Lake Sevan

Lake Sevan is the largest alpine high mountain freshwater lake in the Caucasus region and in Armenia Highland. This countryside reminds me of Scotland with its rolling hills and colours. We stop beside the road and Artur finds red berries for us to try. They're tart, but apparently a delicacy. I'll stick with the Armenian cognac we tried last night as a preferable delicacy! We follow Lake Sevan's shoreline until we come to a restaurant ...
