The Great Feast in Penang

... or ‘Nuoc Mam’ to all the connoisseurs out there). It got my appetite ready to go though, and I was hankering for some more fried delights. Fried Oysters My mommy told me that I probably shouldn’t be eating oyster in any form while overseas. But, I am a BIG fan of that shelled treasure from the sea. “Fried oyster” is quite a ...

Hello Malaysia!

... in Batu Ferringhi, i love the feeling of stepping into the water and not having a cold shock run through my body. The warmest lake on the hottest day back in Canada is still way too cold for me! We rented an ATV and ripped around on the beach. Since the people are spread out it was easy to travel the length of the beach without getting too close to anyone. Anna tried to drive it but it was too difficult for her to manage, she sat on the back while i had a blast carving ...

... into a Bollywood movie and that at any moment everyone will break into a synchronized dance that you don't know the moves to. Frightening. The smells in this city for the most part are something that I will miss.... all the spices.... it seems like you are never more than a block from a chinese spice shop (which smell amazing) or somewhere cooking something that smells delicious on the street..... lots of spicy curries and chinese roast duck ...

... we would spend a few nights there. We went to the Komtar bus station (which is located under the Prangin Mall) to find out that we would need to get to the Sungei Nibong Bus station in order to catch a bus to Tanah Rata. Although they offered a shuttle bus from Komtar to Sungei Nibong for 5 RM (an hour before the bus would leave), the total cost of the ticket was going to be 42 RM, and so we declined. Instead we went to the Banana ...

... tapping their finger to their over inflated so called fixed price (my ar**) sheet. Dream on guys. We are staying in a huge room in Hotel Mingood. Back in the land of luxury with air conditioning, HOT water in a real bath as apposed to just a cold water shower on Koh Lipe although we do miss the outdoor bathroom experience. There is Wifi here which is always a bonus. Although I am so behind with this blog......as Martin likes to remind me, often!!! The next morning we have our free ...

... coach - we got on and all looked good, we had lots of room and then we sat and waited for the journey to begin and then we sat and waited some more! After about an hour and a half we pulled out of the car park hooray! We are on our way to Bangkok. Um no actually we are not we got about two miles down the road and pulled into yet another car park where we were shooed off of our coach onto an identical one but with more people on board - finally after about an hour of waiting this coach ...

... and were able to get up really close to the wild sharks. After the shark feeding we went snorkling again and saw a Reef Shark but missed the photo op. Did manage to get a photo of a large Barracuda. Had dinner at nearby restaurant, it was expensive but nice. Thoroughly enjoyable day!

Beaches, Beaches, Beaches!

... on the beach. We stayed in a really nice room in a guest house with our own bathroom, air con and a fridge. The best bit though was it was about a 20 metre walk to the ocean which had to be the warmest we've been in yet. It was warmer than a lot of the showers we've taken in Asia! As we drove into town we saw a restaurant 'decked' out as a ship. Being tourists we decided we had to give it a go. They even made the staff ...

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. November 9th, 1999
Well here it is…a week after Christmas and a month since my last update. So much has changed. I can honestly count the last month as perhaps the best time I've had in my life. Strong statement but knowing there is a happy ending may get you past the first few depressing paragraphs of this update!

So Much for Expectations!
Penang, Malaysia.
