Last day in Lijiang - First & Second day in Kunming Sorry I haven't been updating. I have been sick since about Tuesday. Being sick in China is miserable. That is all I have to say about that. Our last day in Lijiang was pretty relaxing. We woke up and took a two hour bus ride to the Tiger Leaping Gorge. The Yangtze gets very narrow here, and the rapids are really strong. It is about a 3.5 mile hike from the bus to the gorge and back. There is a path running along side the river and every...
Kunming, Yunnan, China apowell5 Kunming traffic is made and the Taxi Drivers are even crazier. They fit their cab in spaces that I wouldn't fit my motor bike. And they only know 2 speeds, stop and flat out. Your should see the new roads they are building on stilts. Really scary.
They are coming to pick us up at 3 to go shopping and dinner, so I had better get a hurry on and have a shower.
We are both tired but had a good trip.
May not have access to internet in Nujiang, so if things go quiet, thats the reason....
The day started with a trip to Western Mountain an the outskirts of Kunming. We got a cable car to the top and walked down through some amazing steps and caves, on the way we saw sculptures carved our of the mountin, by Buddist monks in 1740 something and the carvings took 75 years to complete. One Monk worked for 14 years on one carving of some of their gods and at the end he was carving the final piece of the work, a nib of a pen held by the god of Scholars, when the nip broke off. he was d...
Kunming, Yunnan, China hrccpam We headed off early again to go to the stone forest. 2 hour drive.
It took us an hour just to get out of Kunming, the traffic is amazing, no one used indicators, they just push in. Padestrian crossings are for cars not people. Even if the light is red for cars and green for padestrians, car continue to go through. As with most Asian countries there are motor bikes everywhere, but mixed with that are thousands of bush bikes, many with unbelievable loads on them and it is bedlum. We have see...

Kunming, Yunnan Province, China henna80... gateway between the West and East and has alot of ethnic diversity. 8th April Started off the day trying to track down SCH China our company office out in these far flung parts. Ross who I know well from work now runs a small office out here as he married a local girl. I didn't get to far with leaving messages in Chinese over the phone so I hired a bike and set off on two wheels again. Riding around Kunming is fairly relaxed, that is the road rules are fairly ...
Kunming, China dj-travelblog09... are my thoughts on the cafes: - The Prague cafe has a little library and great food. I like the goats cheese and vegetable sandwich. - French cafe has a limited menu for vegetarians and I think it's overpriced, Bob likes it because he can play chess on their computer. - Vintage cafe is my favorite so far, the decor is really good and the menu is well developed with lots unusual ...
Kunming, Yunnan, China countessk... all well and good, but one of the basics about power production is the need to have the generation near the use. While there are millions of people here, there aren't billions. So the power has to be transported a long, long way, towards those power-hungry coastal cities. Or are there plans to move more industry here, to our blue skies? Flying into Kunming yesterday, you can't but notice how every building has large solar water heating installations. And now in ...
Kunming, Yunnan, China happysheep... home. Such questions as whether I had done the right thing, whether I could be away for such a long time entered my mind and I longed for some comforts of home like a Seinfeld rerun or a slice of pizza or a day with my family or friends. Alas, it would take only a day or so for me to get reinvigorated for the experience that I chose. As part of a cure for the homesickness, and upon Dan and Conor's suggestion, I joined them to check out the new 007 movie on ...
Kunming, Yunnan, China chiapoe... even from this height the main road is remarkably noisy throughout the day and night. I could write an entire entry on the trials of Chinese traffic, but for the moment, my biggest complaints are noise related. The amount that the Chinese use their horns makes even the Italians seem remarkably docile drivers. And the major bane of my life currently - the road cleaning trucks. The first time I heard one of these I thought it was faintly entertaining that they ...
