Good Day Sunshine

... he was trying to lose me. It turns out, he was not trying to lose me because eventually we swam over another turtle. They must not have been friends because the moment they saw each other, they both bolted and were gone in a flash. So, it turns out, turtles can swim as fast as they want, and he was just hanging out with me for a little while there. It was fantastic! A very good ending to the day, and to my time in Cairns, indeed.

... Rode 30kms, kids happy-as-larry, scott happy too with all the exercise!!!

18/06/09

Well , what was meant to be a 3-4 day lay-over, turned into 10 days! We have loved Cairns, great weather, food and free recreational activities; we literally had to drag our selves away. We are all pretty happy to set off on the next leg after such a big break. (And the car is spotless thanks to a bit of detailing courtesy of ARB, yayyy!)

Among them are Rainforestation Nature Park, Tjapukai Aboriginal Cultural Park, and Kuranda Skyrail Rainforest Cableway, which extends for 7.5 km (4.7 mi) over World Heritage rainforest. A notable feature of the Cairns esplanade is a swimming lagoon with adjoining barbecue areas. In May 2003, the then Cairns ...

Unlike one girl in our group of four who struggled with the tests and had to be babysat throughout the dive. As a result our time 'down under' was shortened to about 20 minutes instead of the max 40 minutes. It was a little frustrating but understandable and anyway we still left amazed ...

... coral and plenty of fish and stingrays, and even the deadly box jellyfish which put one diver in hospital. It was a great experience and well worthwhile and we hope to use of new skills in Fiji later on. We finished our long stay in OZ with a 2 day stop at Cairns, with a quick stop at a croc farm where Steve Irwin wannabees did stupid things with 5 meter long crocs. We also fed kangaroos and saw the worlds largest bird, a Cassawary. We travelled ...

What an undertaking as we chopped, stirred, sautéed baked and decorated our portion of the meal. We all sat down with the proper wines and saluted our success! It was almost like God was playing with a giant cold water tap, repeatedly turning it on and off like a cheeky little kid playing unsupervised in a bath.

The central business district of Cairns looked just like any every other regional Australian city, but with the concentration of souvenir shops, restaurants and information booths along ...

Off the beaten track

... One joey was not so pleased to spot us and bounded head first into mum's pouch. I have a splendid photo or a slightly resigned looking mother roo with her joey's rear legs and tail hanging out of her pouch. It occurs to me as I write this that 'roos have only the two legs, so the word 'rear' is a bit redundant if not just blatantly wrong. But somehow "back legs" is the impression it gives, so I'm leaving it in!
