... without a hitch. Coffee and hot food soon appears as we ride the tide toward Bogue Inlet. Of course, on the other side of the inlet the tide will be on our nose but there's nothing to do but go forward and hope we'll make up time during slack water. Jim Nixon posted us earlier that he'd be crossing paths with us on a delivery aboard a Kadey Krogen 42 and to keep an eye out for him. There was virtually no traffic on the ICW and we soon see a Krogen approaching. ...

... through the bridge. Some mild panic resulted as the various boats scrambled to stay out of the way. Further along the southbound boats simply moved aside until the barge passed while others asked the tug captain what their move to avoid him should be. The captain's response was usually something along the line of "stay out from in front of me" and "just don't run into me," both of which seemed pretty obvious.

We found a nice little library in New Bern and did some work in the morning before deciding it was time to get off our butts and start moving. The Croatan National Forest was right nearby and it was a good day to do a little hiking. The hiking is definitely not as challenging as it was in the Appalachians but anything to get moving again is worth it. We found an awesome trail that was actually about 20miles long, so we picked a spot to start and ...

Highway 70 south brought me past the Croatan National Forest to the coastal towns of Morehead City and Beaufort, both on the Intercoastal Waterway, protected from the Atlantic by a series of islands and peninsulas. Beaufort is the 3rd oldest city in North Carolina and is full of beautiful old houses with porches and widow's walks. I walked along the waterfront and then joined Captain Bob on the Water Bug for a history and wildlife cruise. We saw three of the wild horses ...
