... this while doing the routine morning service on the engine. The options are (reasonably) warm with almost certain rain and low winds, vs. cold and high winds directly on the nose. As I said earlier, I can handle cold or rain but not both together. I opt to endure the wet and make time with the hope of reaching Oriental before the weather deteriorates. ... bridges we played follow the leader thru the Surf City Bridge, 45 minutes earlier than our projected time. This padding in the schedule paid off at the end of the day.

Highway 70 south brought me past the Croatan National Forest to the coastal towns of Morehead City and Beaufort, both on the Intercoastal Waterway, protected from the Atlantic by a series of islands and peninsulas. Beaufort is the 3rd oldest city in North Carolina and is full of beautiful old houses with porches and widow's walks. ... had a delicious Banh Mi sandwich with garlic fries and a side of mustard greens. I also had a Dark Flite beer sampler - four samples of stout beers. All were good. Ruth had a hard cider which she said was unusually good. VJ then drove us over to their daughter Kendra's house who graciously offered to put us up during our stay.
