... Beach nice place. We decided to walk the mike to the beach it was 4:30 a hot walk indeed, the beach was packed with families enjoying the heat the beach was really long. The downside the surf was huge, I was so looking forward to a swim but decided my body didn't need the smashing around the waves would have provided...Bryan went in and said he was smashed down a few times. We might go again in the morning if the wind is calmer the waves ...

Our next recommendation took us to Fort Macon along the coastline. We were at Fort Pickens in Pensacola and this was similar in size. There were several strings of forts of this type set up along the coastline during the Civil War. Some have made it and some not.

It's always nice to see "history" still standing...even IF refurbished.

Highway 70 south brought me past the Croatan National Forest to the coastal towns of Morehead City and Beaufort, both on the Intercoastal Waterway, protected from the Atlantic by a series of islands and peninsulas. Beaufort is the 3rd oldest city in North Carolina and is full of beautiful old houses with porches and widow's walks. I walked along the waterfront and then joined Captain Bob on the Water Bug for a history and wildlife cruise. We saw three of the wild horses ...
