A fitting name for a happy place

From the moment you walk in the door at the Happy Dragon, you're greeted with a friendly smile and instantly feel the kind of warmth that this hostel, located conveniently close to the Beijing subway and has to offer. Its walls are covered with signatures and pictures of a thousand happy guests that have come before you.

The staff speak English fluently and will trip over themselves to help you with whatever you need. I was trying to find Twix for my girlfriend (we can't get them in Harbin), and the woman working the front desk spent 20 minutes trying to help me and then finally found two Western supermarkets, called them each, and getting me the exact address of them both.

I stayed in two different rooms in the hostel, and I enjoyed them both. The beds were comfortable, spacious, and clean (what more can you ask for?), and the rooms come complete with personal lockers (big enough to fit about two full-sized backpacking packs) for each individual in the room.

The restaurant downstairs serves very affordable and tasty breakfasts and doubles as a bar at night. The drink prices are comparable to those of the bars outside though.

All-in-all, this little gem, located in Beijing's happening Dong Cheng district, is a bargain at 90RMB ($15) per night.

      Christmas Cheer

A friend and I spent Christmas Eve and the following few days here. The staff are incredible, so friendly, helpful and enjoyable to be around. They had a party for us Westerners with gifts, free drinks in the bar, karaoke and just general good fun. I highly recommend using them to book train tickets, organise a trip to the Great Wall and acrobat show. Definitely recommend for all ages as long as you're not fussy about a bit of noise and a few tipsy nights. Food was delicious, catered really well for all tastes! All nationalities there, families and friends welcome. Also really great location.

This hostel was fairly well located in the centre of Beijing and many of the main sight seeing spots in walking distances or on a subway away. The staff where all so friendly, Marina, Peach on reception and Mayani in the bar, were so pleasaunt and helpful the whole time, they have very good English and helped organise trips etc. Mayani was a great laugh and made the experience more enjoyable. Clean and tidy rooms with everything you need really.

I was here for 6 nights in total and it was just like a home. The staff gave 110% and nothing was too much trouble - they always gave you a big smile when you came back after being out all day. A great athmosphere - good service - nice food - great room with comfortable bed - good shower and amnities - the best.

Lovely hostel with helpful staff and really nice little bar. Just a shame we stayed in the sister hotel rather than the hostel itself.

On June 28th, I finished my last day of teaching in China. The whole week the kids had seem surprised that I was leaving, even if I had already told them! I guess the term just flew by, and it really did go way too fast. Towards the end, I realised I would miss certain things; the main one being no stress in my life whatsoever. I had a good, …

Sunday I headed to the Great Wall of China, early Sunday morning. Everyone on the bus was very excited, and a little tired, and I proceeded onto the 2 hour journey to Mutianyu. I decided to go to this section of the wall, as it is not the main area for tourists, but there is still a ski lift to get up to it, and a toboggan down- which I was VERY …

      Our first temple

A travel blog entry by crazyadventure on Apr 11, 2014

Today we went to our first temple.

We walked in and paid student price again. We were given a big bundle of incense which we could burn in what was basically an open barbecue, which was amazing our first thought was "could you imagine this in england health and safety wouldn't allow it".

The temple its self was beautiful and …
