A fitting name for a happy place

From the moment you walk in the door at the Happy Dragon, you're greeted with a friendly smile and instantly feel the kind of warmth that this hostel, located conveniently close to the Beijing subway and has to offer. Its walls are covered with signatures and pictures of a thousand happy guests that have come before you.

The staff speak English fluently and will trip over themselves to help you with whatever you need. I was trying to find Twix for my girlfriend (we can't get them in Harbin), and the woman working the front desk spent 20 minutes trying to help me and then finally found two Western supermarkets, called them each, and getting me the exact address of them both.

I stayed in two different rooms in the hostel, and I enjoyed them both. The beds were comfortable, spacious, and clean (what more can you ask for?), and the rooms come complete with personal lockers (big enough to fit about two full-sized backpacking packs) for each individual in the room.

The restaurant downstairs serves very affordable and tasty breakfasts and doubles as a bar at night. The drink prices are comparable to those of the bars outside though.

All-in-all, this little gem, located in Beijing's happening Dong Cheng district, is a bargain at 90RMB ($15) per night.

A friend and I spent Christmas Eve and the following few days here. The staff are incredible, so friendly, helpful and enjoyable to be around. They had a party for us Westerners with gifts, free drinks in the bar, karaoke and just general good fun. I highly recommend using them to book train tickets, organise a trip to the Great Wall and acrobat show. Definitely recommend for all ages as long as you're not fussy about a bit of noise and a few tipsy nights. Food was delicious, catered really well for all tastes! All nationalities there, families and friends welcome. Also really great location.

This hostel was fairly well located in the centre of Beijing and many of the main sight seeing spots in walking distances or on a subway away. The staff where all so friendly, Marina, Peach on reception and Mayani in the bar, were so pleasaunt and helpful the whole time, they have very good English and helped organise trips etc. Mayani was a great laugh and made the experience more enjoyable. Clean and tidy rooms with everything you need really.

I was here for 6 nights in total and it was just like a home. The staff gave 110% and nothing was too much trouble - they always gave you a big smile when you came back after being out all day. A great athmosphere - good service - nice food - great room with comfortable bed - good shower and amnities - the best.

Lovely hostel with helpful staff and really nice little bar. Just a shame we stayed in the sister hotel rather than the hostel itself.

          Tripping In China

....literally. As China has not yet been introduced to the wonderful world of litigation, they see fit or perhaps find it comical to put random uneven steps everywhere. Either that or they will have a hole in the middle of the sidewalk for no apparent reason. The don't like to use even concrete sidewalks because stone gravel will do just fine. I...

          Beijing (Part 1)

Waking up early on our first day we had a look around our charismatic little hotel. It's an old courtyard style building that used to house officials during the Qing dynasty. We stayied in an executive suite that's quite spacious with lots of old (probably fake) Chinese furniture and a huge four-poster bed. There were red lanterns that lined the...

We arrived in Beijing at 5:00 after a 5 hour train ride. Needless to say we were not too well rested. We got out of the massive station and headed towards Tiananmen Square to watch the flag raising ceremony. After about 30 minutes of walking we did not cross any streets that looked like we should have crossed according to the map. We asked a lo...
