    ... Apparently, the residents of the island have collaborated in restoring these structures – they are EVERYWHERE. Also everywhere are small churches that look they were all built from the same set of plans. Between the similarity of homes, road networks and churches, every new town we passed looked like one we had already been in!

    Packed up and cleaned our cabin this morning ready to return home. We travelled back over the bridge to the town on the mainland called Kalmar. We visited Kalmar Castle which has been extensively restored. The first defence tower was built in 1180. The city grew up around the castle.     Today we visited the Brogholm Castle estate in the town of Brogholm. First stop was the fortress which stands at the top of a rise visible from the road. The original castle was erected in the 12th century and it has had many extensions and alterations since and has been the scene of many battles and sieges throughout the Middle Ages.
