They say first impressions count. Our first impression of Hanoi was that we were greeted by a magician in a taxi. Not only with the power of his mind did he make our meter spin at quadruple the speed it should, he then managed to turn a 200,000 dong note into a 10,000 dong note before my very eyes. We left the taxi, raging at him, raging at each …
After a short flight we arrived in Hanoi!! Not as much traffic of motorpeds here. We checked into our hostel in the centre then went out for some vietnamise food. Our hostel receptionist took us out for drinks and to a karaoke bar, spent the night with 2 Germans/ Australian couple and 2 vietnamise singing the night away!!
Goooood morning Vietnaaaaaam! It's wet, it's cold & these guys got their driving licences out of a cereal box! Seriously, it needs to be seen to be believed. It's not annoying, it's just a real eye opener. Anyway, the day started with a trip to the DMK airport in Bangkok. It cost us 300baht which wasn't too bad. We got pulled up just before …
... a pair of pants and the guy said 100,000 Dong so you gest the waters and I said 50,000 he only came down to 90,000 so I said 60,000 and he said 90,000 again.....so walked away in anticipation that he would call me back and nope....quite shocked but then thinking well maybe I was hitting too low.....it's been a while for myself.....found another lady selling pants and she started out at 150,000.....was thinking here we go.....after some bartering ...
... a bad name, that sort of thing. We paid a significantly lower sum (still thinking that we had at least been taken on a journey which justified a taxi). It was only later we discovered the depths of his audacity and for the next day Rob eyeballed every taxi in the hopes of finding him again and venting some frustration. We never found him, but it did teach us some useful lessons which we have since employed (more of that later). These are;

This hotel is located right by the lake in the old quarter with plenty of restaurants nearby.
The rooms are nice and comfortable and breakfast is very good.
The best thing about this hotel is the amazing staff. Thuy Morning and Thuy Afternoon are just exceptional receptionist who will go out of their way to do anything to assist.
They managed to change train tickets we had been sold in HCMC to soft tourist class for us and the porter even escorted us to the train station, changed our tickets and put us in our carriage on the train. This is above and beyond the service I would expect anywhere.
We unexpectedly returned to the hotel having had a very bad experience on a Hanoi Bay Cruise with The Real Kangaroo Cafe and the staff were so kind and gave us an upgraded room for our stay.
I cannot recommend this hotel enough it really is a perfect base for exploring Hanoi.
