Ca Tru - a historic musical art form

... old ballads. It is not the kind of music that inspires toe tapping or humming.

Originally, ca tru, also called hat a dao or hat noi (literally song of the women singers), was associated with a geisha type of entertainment. Attractive young singers entertained men in a relaxed environment, sometimes serving drinks and snacks. Performances were mostly for men. When men entered a ca tru inn they purchased bamboo ...

So long Vietnam it's been a BLAST!

Sorry for the lack of updates, we've been keeping ourselves pretty busy trying to see all we could see before leaving Vietnam. Happy to report that John, Kerry (UK) and I have just booked our bus heading to Vientiane, Laos leaving tonight. This trip is a 20 hour ...

Staying out of the typhoon's path

... overrated. The only nice thing about it is that there is a pagoda nearby, built on a single pillar, about 10-12 feet up in the air, quite pretty. Then, walking through the Botanical Gardens, we saw at least 8-10 couples taking their wedding pictures. On a Wednesday afternoon... bizarre. Must be a Feng Shui, hocus pocus thing to marry on Sep. 30, more auspicious than any other day of the month.

In 2 days, it will be Trung Thu, which is like a mid-moon, mid-month ...

Our Journey Through Vietnam

... other girls (including Roger) bought perfume - fake of course!

The trip that I had been waiting for as it symbolised Vietnam to me was the trip to the Mekong Delta. After a very long, cramped journey due to the volume of traffic not distance we arrived to the quay to pick up our boat - junk, to see the floating cash n carry market, people from the villages around come to buy for their shops and they don't sell to indivuals. The boats were well laden and low in the ...

Good morning Vietnam!

... to be transported, and how they got the things to stay on in the first place, and how the bikes hadn't fallen over. I also managed to spot 5 people riding on one motorbike, and a family of 3, who whilst the Dad was driving the motorcycle down the highway, the mother was changing the baby's nappy. As we got closer into the centre I got my first glimpse of life in Vietnam, everything, from restaurants to barbers, is conducted in the middle of the ...

First taste of 'Nam (bitter)

... no information from anyone at all (the drivers just went for a wander, and sat in some hammocks, or spat everywhere - vile) we deduced from a signpost that this indeed was the border, and the place to check out of Laos was closed for lunch until 1.30pm.

We sat down on a concrete lip and taught the girls how to play ******** (it's a card game Nanny). This wasted a while and during the second hand about ten of the Laos men just came over and stood ...

Good Night Vietnam

... a hot dog in sealed plastic. My meal was as lovely as it sounds. If you think that hot dogs in North America are bad, they are worse here. Surprisingly, my stomach did settle down after a while though. Around 9:00 I dozed off and woke up with a cramp moving from my right calf to my foot and shin. It is not easy to get rid of a cramp lying down. It took me a while, but by putting my feet flat on the wall, I was able to get rid of it. I guess I did not have enough ...

musee de l'ethnologie ...et autres!

Hanoi and the north

... only offered their deluxe room at $25, when we asked for a cheaper room on arrival we were given the tiny $20 room. Later on we when I queried the price and type of room, we were told the standard rooms have outside bathroom and that none were available. I didn't see any outside bathrooms while we were there. Nice people but, in my opinion, they are scamming foreigners. We are now at The Dong, paying $12 for a nicer room, with a balcony. Laters
