Somehow everything just worked......

What an epic day, but awesome at the same time

So we meet up with our Austrian friends, Franziscka and Jess as well as a French dude and his swiss girlfriend at about 0700 so we can get to the bus stop and hopefully grab a bus through to Thanh Hoa in Viet Nam.

After a bit of ******* around finding out where we had to get this bus from a Songthaew pulled up, apparently this is what we were taking to the border. For those of you who don't know what a Songthaew is, it's a vehicle w...

Back into civilisation

What a change

Now we are back into a city, people speak English, western food is served, every 2nd person wants to rip you off and there are quite possibly as many foreigners as Locals in some areas.

It was bittersweet to be in Ha Noi, good to be in a new country but a little bit saddening as there would be no more getting right off the beaten track for the remainder of this trip.

Most of today was spent getting used to Viet Nam, trying to learn a few phrases in the lang...

One day in Hanoi.... thats enough

Hey all

We arrived in Hanoi late last nite, as our two flights were delayed. But that's been the only travel mishap we've had so far, which isn't too bad.

Our first impressions of Hanoi are not great. First off, the airport taxi driver tried to scam us by telling us his taxi had a meter, when it didn't, but we were ok and we made him stop the car and put us in a taxi with a meter. The hotel we're in, does not look like the pictures on the internet... nuff said.

Getting Out of Hanoi.

We managed to book a bus out of Ha Noi and on to Hue. It's pretty lucky because right now is a national holiday and most buses are booked until Monday. I'm ready to leave, Ha Noi is just too busy, loud and dirty for me. Having said that, we have seen some nice things here. We didn't do the snake-blood shot thing, but we watched a really interesting water-puppet show (apparently the nicest in the country), and Halong Bay was beautiful. Last night we wandered into the bar area and found a place...

Fun in Ninh Binh and Halong Bay....

... the streets and markets of Hanoi.... Hanoi is very hot, very humid and very hectic.... as everywhere else in 'nam, full of mopeds and the constant noise of beeping! I think I preferred Saigon/ Ho Chi Minh city.... The highlight of the day was shopping for trainers for trekking in Sapa... I bought a pair of fake shiny silver nikes.. awesome!! (they're already falling apart a week later!)
Hanoi backpackers was full of travellers I'd met along the way, so had ...

To Laus or not to Laus?

Again it was a night "sleeper bus". we knew sleep would be impossible as there are no actual beds, just reclining seats but the comfort factor can alter dramatically.
Again we had a moto ride to the bus office, this time my big pack stayed firmly in the drivers lap ...

Hanoi & Halong Bay

Hanoi & Halong Bay Hanoi is considerably different to Saigon, it was wet and cold the whole time we were there, giving a slightly dismal feel to the place. I quite liked wandering around Hanoi but it didn't seem to have the vibrancy of Saigon. It is easy to get lost and a compass would have come in handy as laneways wind in all directions. We spent a couple days wandering about, just getting a feel for the place and then booked ourselves on a tour of Halong ...

Ben Tre - huge potential of ecological tourism

... and canals... Ben Tre province (a delta province) is located at the end of the Mekong Delta. It has borders with the East Sea to the east, with 60 kilometer-long coastline. The province is 2,322 sq. km2, around 85 kilometers far from Ho Chi Minh City. If you could look through your airplane's window down to Ben Tre, you would feel like it were some heaven's green land!
