... keyboards work by having the person type in Pinyin (which is Chinese writing with Latin characters), and it will then suggest Chinese characters that are similar to what was typed. You can bypass this by pressing CTRL+Space in order to allow the computer to accept the Latin characters as they are so an American can effectively use the computers for Internet and word processing.
