When we arrived at our hotel we had been selected as guest of the day. We got a goodie bag with m&ms and goldfish. Martin was a tad bit excited so we arrived at the airport 2.5 hours early. Unfortunately for Martin that meant many walking laps through the terminal. Our traveling platypus,Patti is ready for her trip down under. It actually looks like we might really be going!
Airport selfie while my flight is delayed! First stop: Frankfurt, Germany for a lovely 4 hour layover. Luckily, according to my flight attendant, "there is a lot of hot air in Washington," so our strong tailwinds should land me in Frankfurt close to my original arrival ...
... to catch the bus to Arlington Cemetery.
Once at the Cemetery we caught the tour of the grounds. What a beautiful cemetery. We saw J.F. Kennedy's grave,along with other members of the Kennedy clan, the changing of the guard ceremony, Arlington House where Robert E. Lee lived. This is a beautiful area. ... Poll and the Washington Monument you can't help but think of all the historic moments that happened on these steps including Martin Luther KIng's speech, "I Have a Dream" and of course 'Forrest Gump' and the original SciFi classic 'The Day the Earth Stood Still'.
After the Lincoln Memorial we were back on the bus going past the King Memorial, The Ford Theatre (where Lincoln was assented) and back to our original departure spot to hope ...
... was easily the most impressive. Here, Jen and I were both a bit overcome with pride and a certain longing to see the United States return to space. Maybe someday.
We spent about two hours at the Udvar-Hazy center before continuing on to Newport News, Virginia. See you there!
