Oooo - we could sleep in today! Our tour left at 6:30am instead of 6am... It was clearer today with no fog, but still very humid.

After about an hours ride in the bus, we arrived at the Nature Conservancy's Southmost Preserve. It is right on the Rio Grande, but much closer to Brownsville (the opposite direction from our other Rio Grande …

Another early start, with the vans leaving at 6am. It was foggy again this morning, and we had a full sized bus to ride. The bus took us to the Riverside Club in Mission for our boat tour on the Rio Grande River. We boarded the boat and we were off in the fog. This part of the Rio Grande is behind a dam, so the water was smooth and calm. It was …

When we arrived at the dock, there were 2 pontoon boats lead by George and Scarlet …

A very early day: up at 5am, on the road by 5:30 and in the van at 6am.

Our tour today is called "Big Day Van". A very well known phrase in the birding world is "A Big ____" with any time frame filling in the blanks. It basically means: how many birds can you identify in one time frame. As a side note, the movie: A Big Year is quite good …

... transferred to Jackson Zoo in Mississippi.

While at the Omaha Zoo I stayed in their dormitory-type accommodation for visiting interns. Most of the interns are undergraduate students or have just graduated and thus are between 19 to 21 years old. I was lucky enough that I didn’t have to share my dorm room with anyone else, and my room even had a lovely view of the sunset. We all had shared kitchen and "living" facilities, which brought back memories of being in ...
