We arrived before dark at the KOA campground just west of Bemidji, after crossing the very beginnings of the mighty Mississippi River that is a small creek here. The next day we met our next-site neighbours Bill and Karen Head from Winnipeg. After checking out, we drove into town where we saw the giant statues of Paul Bunyan (wearing a Shriner's fez) and Babe the Blue Ox, a little yellow submarine, and some fanciful statues made from scrap metal parts.
... would be by snow mobile (or to walk-yikes) across the lake! It was about a 40 minute ride by slow ferry and a 15 minute ride by fast ferry. They put out Christmas trees across the ice and you cross at your own risk! We took our bikes over and road the eight miles around the island. Although it appeared rough and windy when we looked out the window this morning, we decided we had to get out fishing, since there are only two days left. We talked the girls into going along, and since Chloe had been to Pike Bay twice already, she requested trying a different spot. So we started along Star Island...no luck.
