Alabama's hidden gem?

... fun. After the show, we went to lunch with the crew at the wonderful hometown restaurant next door called Lunde's. They stayed open past their normal lunch hours just for us. I had a fried catfish po'boy, and was full for the rest of the day. The guys then invited us to their house this Saturday on our drive up to Decatur, AL from New Orleans. We'll see if we make it, but I bet it would be fun if we do.
... from out of town come join us. It was as if we were on some kind of educational VIP tour when we found out that Morris Dees, one of the co-founders of the Southern Poverty Law Center, was going to be joining us along with his wife, artist Susan Starr. What an opportunity to meet these two bigger than life people. They were both down to earth, friendly and full of life. Once again Marney, thank you for an incredible experience.

Suzy (von Gal) & Young Stevenson

Suzy and her husband, Young live in the house that all four of my Alabama cousins were raised in by Uncle June and Aunt Suzy (or big Suzy once cousin Suzy was born) . Those of you in my family that have been to this house when we were kids, will recognize it’s original stature and grace as you notice the changes and expansions Suzy and Young have made to accommodate raising their combined 5 kids. The property was divided some years back giving Janet (Mother of George’s kids) the ...

Getting soaked in Montgomery

I dropped Luba off at the Savannah airport this morning at 5am. It was hard to see her off. We had the best time ever.

I had taken all side roads today all the way from Savannah. Traveled almost 600 miles before stopping for the day. I rode mostly on US 80 the entire day. I love riding on two lane roads. Its a great way to see the country side.

Stopped in Montgomery, Al. It just will not stop raining. Need a break. Waiting for the weather to ...

This was not an easy task and she scurried out as quickly as she could.

In the afternoon, my cousin Frankie saddled up some of the horses and Alex got to go for a little ride. Then there was more swimming and even time to hold one of Uncle D's new baby ducks...a father's day gift from his daughters.

We had a very peaceful and relaxing visit and can't wait to go back again.

Out in the Middle of Nowhere

... Oreo cookie and cream cheese balls dipped in chocolate...decadence. While Jackie was cooking, we walked down to the barn so Alex could help feed the horses. Tori & Bella were very intrigued with these new creatures and weren't quite sure how to approach them. It was a funny site.

Days 26-27

Rob Troke entry: Day 26, May 28th Ted's driving experience begins. We practice in the parking lot of a Publix and then head for the highway out of Florida. Ted's got the hang of it I think. We drive into southwestern Georgia and stop for dinner at Moby *****, an isolated Country Cooking place along the highway (19 miles south of Blakely). A nice, very southern, old but energetic guy walking to his car noticed our NJ plates and came ...

... highway at Atlanta to look for somewhere to eat only to see lots of men standing either in small groups or on their own beside the road. It would appear they were probably waiting for someone such as construction workers to come a long and offer them a job for the day. It was actually quite sad to see so many looking for work that way with little hope of actually getting anything, especially considering it was quite late in the day.

... with a beer in his hands, or splay-legged in the grass picking burrs from the dogs' tails. I sit with him and immediately there is a tale to hand, and he is transporting us throughout Alabama and the world. But all the world feels like Alabama, is permeated by the same veils of mystique. And when he does turn his memory and his voice to Alabama, he colours seem to heighten and the shadows to lengthen. And he recounts how his practical jokes ended his time as an altar boy, or how ...
