New York the city that never sleeps

23 September 2009

New York New York is an amazing busy, crazy place that you can get lost in..I arrived in New York Laguardia airport at 8.30am and waited for my shuttle to come pick me up and take me to my hostel. The shuttle and the columbian driver came at about 9am and then proceeded to the other 2 terminals to pick up other arrivals.

I got to my Hostel where they said that expedia made a mistake and sent me to another hostel which was a $6 NYC Cab ride away. After I put m...

The Final Chapter Vancouver And so we headed northwards, Vancouver and indeed Canada bound. The border crossing was not too bad - a slight delay because a group of lads ahead of us all had criminal convictions! Lucky them. The journey took us 3 or so hours, picking up Reta en route - a friend from our travels in South America. She helped us navigate the city and find the hotel. We checked in smoothly and then drove to Reta's friend's apartment - where we were parking the car. We were a little...

... salad. It felt good to sit down after lugging our suitcases to the second floor of the deli. The salads came a little while later, and we were floored at how LARGE they were…I mean these servings would feed a small village, and we were a bit perturbed they didn’t tell us that the meals were large…but I digress! We enjoyed a leisurely and tasty lunch. We decided to try to walk to the cruise terminal, as it was ...

I work up in the early hours and decided to get up and go see the city in its waking hours. I went to get a towel and passed a girl on the stairs and asked the time, 10.30. It turns out that the brick walls, just inches away from the windows of my room can make even a bright sunny morning feel like dawn.

As I am waiting for Elena to join me for a week on Tuesday I decided to avoid going to any of the "must sees ...

... to see a line starting from 86th Street winding around the block on Broadway and ending at the next corner on 87th Street. The line moved slowly, after fifteen minutes I moved maybe ten feet. I read the book in my bag, called a friend, looked at a guy in front of me wearing red and white striped pants. A volunteer came outside to help us find which precinct we ...

... the contents of my bag... which he cut us off and said "have you got any fire arms?" I knew i forgot something! Its quite a sombre thing boarder crossings, your not meant to enjoy yourself. Crossing the boarder back in the to US was even more entertaining. They ask you the question "why were you in Canada?" like your ridiculous for leaving the United States in the first place. I was anticipating the following question to be "did you get lost on your way to Michigan or ...

At the very heart of it- New York, New York

... York, however, is. The people are really friendly, but that's probably because they know you're going to spend lots of money. The Hotel is nice, it's small but cosy and clean. The best part is it's just a short walk from the Empire State building. We visited it today and the view was breathtaking. Despite the fact that some of the winds could probably whoosh you off the top ...

Our Packing List

... ourselves for our year away, here it is... Packing for a trip of this scale. Every person has different "essentials" matching their personal style and tolerance for carrying a heavy pack. We considered ourselves to be middle of the road but saw plenty of fellow travelers with significantly more or less gear than us. A big consideration in packing is the type of journey you are taking and the climate you will be traveling through. Our trip was ...
