As my time in Columbus came to an end, I made a daylong excursion to the Civil War prison site at Andersonville, an hour to the east of Fort Benning. The prison site itself consisted of little more than an open field with scattered memorials and other prison key points such as Wirz's Headquarters and the famous Providence Spring, but the guided tour of the site was very informative ...

Interesting note: There were gangs of criminals within the camp who robbed from, terrorized, and murdered other prisoners. They were called The Raiders. Other prisoners organized and worked with guards to arrest and court martial them. Some were returned to the prison by being forced to “running the gauntlet” back in. Six were found guilty of capital crimes and hanged. ...
... when new, more efficient pools and therapy center was built. The entire facility, Roosevelt Warm Spring, is now owned and operated by the Georgia Department of Labor’s Division of Rehabilitation Services and is used for persons with disabilities of all types.
Interesting note: FDR spent 2/3 of his personal fortune building the Warm Springs pools and therapy center.

Interesting note: One of the fields (2-3 acres) beside the house is filled with small plants about 12" tall. When asked, the NPS guide tells us they are pecan (pee-can) trees. They will stay in these fields until they are 3 years old, then go to nurseries to be sold. When in their permanent home, they grow for 15 years before producing pecans. Wow, that is ...

There is another indicator of spring. Part of our drive is on I-77. There are many, many RV’s of various types – motor homes, fifth wheels like us, travel trailers of all sizes – all traveling north. Some pull golf carts in trailers behind the motor home. Some ...
