We didn't get an early start but found ourselves on our way by about 10:30. Once we got to the 403, the weather turned a bit nasty, blowing snow with snow covered patches on the roads. Combined with the creative and artistic output of Motown, this place was the city of dreams, where men had jobs for life, housing was cheap and everything was on the up.......now magnificent art deco buildings with tile facades stand boarded up and covered with graffiti, alongside empty office towers and warehouses. ... Highway 129 North for 1½ miles to the junction with Highway 143 West (Massey Branch Road). Turn left on Highway 143 and travel approx 5 miles to a stop sign. Turn right onto Kilmer Road. Drive for approx 7.3 miles and bear to the right at the junction of Santeetlah Gap and the Cherohala Skyway. Continue for another 2½ miles to the entrance of the Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest.
