"Iron Horse" Translation: Steam Engine Train

Today we drove into Sacramento so that I could see the capitol. It was even prettier than I expected it to be--not as impressive as Denver's, but more old-world like Montgomery. On our way out of town we saw an old steam engine train crossing the main street. It looked as if it carried tourists--I managed to get a photo. We stopped in Merced to gas up at Costco where the weather was absolutely gorgeous. Warm sunshine with a cool breeze--idyllic really.

We made it to the Bakersfield Ham...

We'll hit the road on ... July 12th!

How quickly things change without even leaving yet. Due to the heat, we decided to split the original first day's trip into two. First night we are staying at http://www.oasislasvegasrvresort.com Yes, I know it's roughing it (they only have 20 cable channels), but it beats driving ten hours on the first day.

We have been planning our "epic" trip across the West for some time ...

Home Today, Gone Tomorrow

After driving all morning we arrived back home this afternoon. Got to talk to the neighbors about the local happenings. The lawn is looking sad, overgrown and brown, I'm sure our local watchdog is not very happy with us. Oh well I clean up next week. For now I’ve got to finish up the work I brought home and we leave for Santa Barbara tomorrow for a couple of days.

At Backersfield we at last stopped and ate some typically American
burgers (that mean FAT) in a typically American "restaurant". That's
when I decided I would watch what I eat from now on.

Back to the highway I drove (again) 6h straight, only holding thanks to
a massive dose of coffee and quirky conversations with my dear co-pilot
(I remember aliens).

... them. Stockpiles of discarded shells are typically 100 ft high by 1500 long, unbelievable! These shells are then sold to paving/concrete firms for, dunno what! 3. There's lot of oil activity just N of Bakersfield centered around the town of "Oildale" and one guy was very familiar with Calgary, Edmonton, Lloydminster and Bonnyville where he sold oilfield tools. Now he drills 1200 ft deep water wells around here. 4. Buck Owens owns all of the radio & TV stations in ...

... had been working at a camp in Pennsylvania for all summer. The Camp America logo should be "our people are everywhere" hehe. Already at the railway station in Merced I met Gelareh - a Persian girl living in The US. Thank to her those five hours spent on a train had flown by I don`t even know when. Despite the 2 different places of living and growing, in 2 completely different cultures and religions, at 2 different ends of the world, we ...

Outta there!

So today Bethany and I took off and left Los Angeles. It was a little bit easier than I thought it would be, one reason I think is due to the fact that we left going north through the valley. After awhile we were out of the city and into the flat stinky farmlands of the central valley and onto Visalia. All of which was very dry, dusty and dirty until we got to the foothills of the western sierras and into Sequoia National Park. Bethany did a lot of the ...

... feet above the ground, and then it just fell from beneath us. Just awe inspiring. From one natural scenic wonder to one completely man made. After leaving the Canyon, we did a monstrous drive (well, Mark drove, I navigated - driving on the right freaks me out) back to LA ready for 2 days of fantasy fun at Disneyland. It was just great. Complete cutesy pie perfection but just magic. It's true - it does make you feel like you're 6 years old all over again. We spend the ...
