    The barges never stop - coal, gas and oil in particular are shipped relentlessly. Container barges ply the river endlessly.

    Talking of containers, our hotel in Emmerichh backed onto a very unsightly container terminal which I can advise also works on weekends starting particularly early on a Sunday morning!

    Oh, and barges have air horns!

    We were up bright and early as the sun was cooking our tent by half 7 and set off shorty After, first stop was Duisburg a mere 30 miles away, we found a lidl half way to the city to restock and I bought the best cake I've ever had!!. New goal is to eat one every day it's just a shame I had to share it :( Simon also bought sparkling water instead of still for the second time in 2 days, his C at GCSE German ...

    We started our day eating pastries in the sun while our German friends re packed their suitcases...they almost beat us to leaving the campsite, very embarrassing! First was back to cycling in the woods very dodgy paths for a tandem including a rickety bridge which was a bit scary on the back! We reached Arnhem by mid morning and bought some mango and more pastries to keep us going, it's been boiling all day not a cloud ...
