Hanoi and Halong Bay

When we arrived Sunday Hanoi was suffering from smog. Monday was a better day but the temperature is dropping, good job we are starting to move South I think winter's on its way! There are 6 million people here and about a million scooters as far as I can see. Christmas is obviously a big thing here there are "Father Christmas" shops all over town selling santa suits for children and adults, model santas in all sizes and tinsel etc. The bars and even the History Museum playing Christmas carol...

Lazy mornings and long drives

Today started with a free morning, so we wandered around Hanoi, updated the web site and had lunch. The rest of the day was taken up with a 4 hour bus journey to Halong Bay. The journey was interrupted by a stop at a tourist trap / purchasing opportunity. You can't really complain about them as these places have decent toilets in order to attract tourists. Dinner was followed by 2½ hours in a bar overlooking the sea.

Boat trip in Halong Bay

Again we arrived here at silly o'clock after a 12 hour train journey then a 4 hour bus journey from Hanoi. Just had breakfast and we are getting picked up at 11:30 to go out on a boat around Halong bay, looking forward to it though as it supposed to one of the highlights of Vietnam.

To be completed .......

Got a bus down to the harbour at 11:30 to catch a boat out the islands of Halong Bay. They were amazing, basically just limestone rocks randomnly sticking out of the ocean ! P...

Ha Long has this been going on?

... top deck into the emerald green waters of Halong Bay. Halong Bay itself is absolutely stunning and perfectly picturesque with its 3000 limestone rocks jutting out of the sea towering above and dwarfing our boat, you can fully understand why it is a UNESCO World Heritage Sight. We were worried that the whole place would be littered with tourist boats but it was actually quite quiet. Ha Long means where the dragon decends into the sea, legend has it that islands of ...

... although this included showing us rooms that he described as cinema rooms, ping-pong rooms and even a swimming pool - we thought this was supposed to be a hospital! What was impressive was the cave itself and the way that the engineers had poured the concrete inside it to create the rooms. Back on the bikes we headed back to town via the coast road. It was really pretty winding its way around headlands, deserted beaches and the occasional village. Our only problems were trying ...

... us to the main port where we boarded the same Junk boat for our cruise back to Halong City. The trip was beautiful but wasn't enjoyed as much by Tom who was poorly through some mystery bug. He also didn't enjoy our nice lunch or the five hour bus ride to Hanoi. He also didn't enjoy the night train we caught at 11pm despite being a 'soft sleeper' (1st class) it was still too short.
