Up Close and Personal Rhino Style

... We took the temperature - 46C and 38C in the shade! We drank so mucgh water we had to go and buy more! Because of that we had a shortened village tour but it was still nice. We visited every bar in town and I got distracted by a guy with a dog 'Cookie' who could shake hands and lie down. He was only young so still learning but very cute and excitable. We also met the sister's aunt, who's birthday it was. We said she should give the sweeping to someone else ...

A long, but eventful, driving day!!

... floods.

This meant we had to drive back to Tsumeb but also meant we drove straight back Etosha again! Part of the road actually has the park fence along it and we saw several kudu and a giraffe1 Just after Oshivelo, when the Swart were in front, they radioed in to say they were stopping to change driver and grab a Pepsi. We drove on – straight into a vet fence checkpoint!! These stop people taking fresh meat from north to south due to the 'spread ...

Ngundu Safari Lodge

... as he gave the boy several clips around the ear hole, afraid it has to be done.

Ngundu Safari Lodge is just 1km out of town, a pleasant campsite and some really nice chalets with very interesting wood carvings all around the lodge area. From our pitch we had a view of the Okavango River looking out over Angola. We could actually see the Angolan countryside. At night camp has a 3 man security team ...

On the Border

... advantage of this and cruised along the Kavango river with Namibia on one side and Angola on the other. The Angolan side was busy with people washing themselves and their clothes and we passed the river border post too where Mokoros (wooden dug out canoes) transport people between the two countries. C

Day Fourteen - Rundu

... most people head to the KFC equivalent for lunch, I just grab a snack in the supermarket.

We then drive to our campsite, right on the Kavango River (the border with Angola). We set up our tents and go on a boat ride down the river. It's sunset so it's really pretty and we have drinks on the boat. We moor on the Angolan side of the river and illegally enter the country for about 20 minutes. The ...

... easier for them to get up, akin to getting up on your skis on the slopes! Umvuvu means Hippo, in Botswana. I'm sure travelling over to the island was the wettest I have ever been. Literally soaked to the skin due to the rain. As it's still damp it's really difficult to dry things out....and I thought this was a holiday?! The highlight of the stay was the traditional dancing in the evening. I have some great photos. The local ...

Otjitotongwe Cheetah Park

... night, our whole truck went in to the bar. It was only us and the owner's son and nephew. Did I mention that they were gorgeous? We drank, played pool and listened to music. They had this nasty moonshine that you had to drink if you lost at the pool table. Needless to say, I lost. Boy, was it nasty. I hate liquor anyways. Basically, the cheetah park was amazing and I will always remember it.

Waving at Angola

... Let someone taste and fill the glasses. I order fettuccini with chicken and she asks whether I want fries with that. No, i do not want any fries with pasta. Baked potatoes then? No, nothing, she gets very confused. Hubby has steak. It takes them more than an hour to prepare this. At another table, a guy, who is not used to 4 (or 2) years old is getting VERY stressed and angry. When the food finally arrives, it is nice. My sweet Hubby leaves her a tip, as if there was any service.

Rundu

... kept going north trying to "accidentally" cross into Angola. After about half an hour of walking we were disappointed to find out the border was actually another 10km away and that the river we saw was just a tributary from the main river. Returning to camp in the dark we ate dinner and hit the campsite bar. For some reason everyone was in a drinking mood. After multiple round of beers we started in on the tequila shots. That went on with way too ...

There is a Lay-o-purd een the water-hole!!

... energy... a few of us spent almost the enitre time lifting them up and swinging them around... it was quite the experience. After the Himbas it was off to Etosha Nat'l park... finally time for some game drives! We got lucky and saw a bunch of elephants and lions on the first day, as well as a rhino. 3 of the Big Five down, two to go (leopard and buffalo). The camps we stayed at all had floodlit waterholes, where everyone gathers at night to quietly watch for animals as they come ...
