We left Nikko for Nagoya via Tokyo, the whole journey took 5 hours by train. The only thing we could tell to do in Nagoya was to see a castle but we arrived too late so instead we went out to dinner and watched movies on the laptop. Greg got extensive assistance in planning out our next day with our hotel clerk, deciphering the train ...
Tsumago, Chubu, Japan trizzyb...
Nakatsugawa, Chubu, Japan clemandpo... village. I.e. Williamsburg, though without the faux colonists and more souveneir shops. Some background: long ago there was a highway of sorts for merchants to travel to and from Edo and Kyoto alone the Kiso Valley that runs through the middle of Japan. This highway is the Nakasendo, which I believe translates to middle mountain path. As this highway developed, post towns came into existence to serve the weary travelers--food and accomodation mostly ...
Tsumago, Chubu, Japan mchao... It was these moments on the train, that felt like paradise to me. The view outside my window of sun shining, mountains lazing in the background, and sakura blossoms twisting gently in the wind. I wanted to jump off the train right there and walk among it all. I loved China for it's wild rustic chaotic feel. The chaos of Mother Nature if you will. But, Japan is the exact opposite. It is as though Mother Nature tried it's very best to neatly craft ...
Kawaguchiko, Japan andrew81Hakuba: 1-6 February Lee-San at the Aria Hotel in Hakuba is one of the coolest people we have ever met. Standing at a diminutive five feet, Lee-San (his nickname, "like Bruce Lee") who, from his entertaining tales, must be in his early sixties, spends four months of the year running the hotel, four months landscaping gardens in Tokyo and the other four "climbing mountain" around Hakuba and in the Andes and Himalayas. He jumps around when he ...
Hakuba-mura, Chubu, Japan gregandfi... One of the runs was 5.9 Kms long, making for a seemingly endless ride down the mountain. It was one of our favorite runs. The top of the mountain had great views of the surrounding Japanese Alps and the village below. We stayed at a place called Lodge Nagano. It was a fantastic lodge run by an Australian guy who had been living his last 18 winters in Japan. I want his job! The lodge had super friendly staff who cooked you breakfast each ...
Nozawaonsen-mura, Chubu, Japan gregandfi... high mountain passes between Kyoto and Tokyo. I chose this route because the old post towns along the way are known for their historic wooden architecture, particularly Narai. Charming and beautiful. True, rural Japan...simple slow life!
Nagano prefecture, Japan pedalpaddle... enough. I didn't visit any museums in both towns, because I went there to enjoy the old town atmosphere, not museums. There were some displays for tourists in Tsumago such as a stable, old inn, and water wheel and they all satisfied me. At the end of Tsumago, I was very tired, but from the beginning, I intended to finish my momorable hike at Nagiso Station. That's why I didn't even stop by the bus stop in Tsumago. On the way to Nagiso Station, I dropped by a Tsumago Castle Ruin on the ...
