Looking Goodin Dalian

... mushroom. OR, shave off one side of your hair, and have a long emo fringe that covers your face. (These styles were very popular at the hairdresser I went to (where no one spoke English) so as you can imagine, I was very nervous. But coming out looking like I just come from a preppy private school in the English Countryside is better. Phew way to dodge a bullet Peter J.)

... meal cost 32 yuan. When I compare it to American prices, it is less than $5 so I should be fine with that. But to compare it to China meal prices it is quite expensive.

As a bonus I am adding some KFC pictures. This is taken in Dalian and my western friends call it the KFC church. Because ... it looks like a Church. None of the others look like this one. So, I wanted to share it with you. Enjoy...

Long Haul to Liaoning

... and desperate to find one, like the last time I went to Shanghai) and offloaded the books and cds, figuring if they went missing (like the time when Nic sent me some groovy silvery spangly undies from Perth) I would be ****** off, but not in danger of crying, whereas if the toys, handbag or high heels went missing, I would be reduced to a blubbering mess. This makes me wonder at my priorities. A few years ago Tanya told me I was under qualified in the 38 (ie ...

My first haircut in China

Gosh - talking about a haircut on a blog?!?! I hope I am not boring you. But it was interesting. I saw a small barber shop around the corner from my apartment and it didn't look too fancy so I hoped it would be inexpensive to go there and get a haircut. So, I set off with two major words of vocab. Duan - short and I was going to point to the side of my head and bu tai duan - not too short and point to the top of my head. I found the phrase for haircut as well ...

... didn’t fess up right at the beginning. She was happy with her massage, but after some comparisons I definitely think I got the more skilled masseuse.

To top off the evening, we headed to Susan’s, one of the only true western restaurants in this part of China. I went all out and ordered an orange Julius and a poutine. It is not quite the same, but a pretty darn close replica, especially for China. The ...

We will English You

... One student was in charge of the banners, one in charge of the t-shirts and one in charge of the music. By the next meeting we have 30 t-shirts for 45 volunteers, and no design. My first complaint was how did they think 45 people were going to fit in to 30 t-shirts? Daniella and I were volunteered to try to track down some extra black t-shirts in a market near our house with the instructions of not spending more than Y5 per t-shirt.

As for the ...

Bankruptcy

It is Heidi first full day of teaching, and we are launching our Stock Market Game. The premise is simple, randomly handout six cards to every student that is either $100 or a stock (A,B,C,D) explain to them the goal of the game is to amass the most wealth that they can. It works best with two people, because one person can be in charge of randomly changing the price of stocks (all going up) and the other can be the bank, loaning out $1000 for every $100 of insurance ...

There don't seem to be any police officials involved, just the attendants with walkie-talkies. It looked like all the cops in my neighborhood police station stepped outside and watched the whole thing, just like all the other ...

Dalian - Haerbin - Datong

... quite impressive and worth the visit. the group split again that day with me, al and katie heading inside the church into a museum and then onto some buddhist temples the highlight of which was a big 20 metre (?) high gold buddha. we all met back up later for dinner and drinks in a korean place. after that it was a mad dash to the train station in 2 separate taxis where we lost kama, nate, bai ling and gerhardt, and didnt see them again. we said goodbye to katie and ...
