Beautiful Foreshore Gardens & No Sand Castles

... Road to the small navy port but there was no lighthouse to be found. I then asked some locals who all seemed rather confused with the map and they all told me there was no lighthouse on the small hill.

In the end I gave in and continued my foreshore walk along Haibin Road.
I had to use the actual road as at the moment the foreshore is a ...

... between the north and the south of China brought prosperity and an increase in population to the island. In 1663, the island's population was evacuated yet again, this time in response to the outbreak of an epidemic. Twenty seven years later, in 1690, the island was resettled by three families (Cong, Zou, and Jiang). In 1703, the island was chosen as the base for another rebel force ...

The Gift That Is Given & a New Beach To Play

... of my future blogs and life. Right now life is not where I thought it would be and weeds are growing on my pathway where I never anticipated they would be. The future I had created in my mind has been erased and changed in a way I never expected. But life, no matter what it throws our way it continues its own adventure and either we are willing participants or non willing participants, it will no ...

Childrens day

Got up on my day off today to see the Childrens day show. Today is national childrens day in China and for those of you that are short enough you can get into any Chinese monument half price. The show was really impressive, with costume changes every scene and well rehearsed dance moves. It was even better because as Helen had been helping her primary school kids rehearse she got a staring role singing at the end and backstage passes. At the beginning all the ...

My time in Yantai so far

... that Im pulling an angry expression. Humorous moments have been plentiful this week though and the lows are outweighed by the highs. In my last class I was doing the differences between the UK and China on the board and after a few perfectly PC answers about the weather food etc came shouts of 'Yellow' 'Yellow' teacher. As they grew louder and louder and I could not ignore them any more I then had to try and explain that this was 'not good English' and 'Asian' was better, much ...

Giant Budda and 1st evening on the tiles

... pat bars (and 2 clubs, as yet unvisited) that are any cop (and by that I mean not /strip bars/saunas) but that doesn't mean to say the music is any good by western standards. On Saturday evening we had the pleasure of the company of some Chinese sailors (who were scarily persistent) and some Chinese students. The Chinese in Yantai seem to have a style of dancing which is, different shall we say. And taste in music which ...

Humorous moments teaching

Top 5 humorous moments so far in Yantai: Mhairi on her 1st day asking one of the Korean boys to introduce himself, I realize my error only at the last moment when writing on the board: Kim Jong Il (I was had) Que much hilarity in Korean language class for the rest of the period. The classrooms all have small stages where you ...

Liang Wei in Weihai

... train. Not having my guide or phrase book had already caused us enough trouble and we were only in the country a few hours. I left both books at home assuming we'd be getting the ferry to a port only an hour from Beijing, somewhere I know well, and from there a train to Mongolia. Thus I assumed we'd not need either book. Ummm.. those plans didn't quite work out. But not too worry. A Real Chinese experience As for our unplanned stay in Weihai. Liang Wei, the local guy ...

Farewell Yantai

... and my shaky Chinese... So now I'm in Taiyuan, once the most polluted city in the world, now about the third. I was wondering why I couldnt see the sun... Anyway tomorrow I'm off to Pinyao, a beautiful walled city, so I can get away from the awful hotel I've booked myself into. I won't show you a picture, because the parents would be horrified! Anyway something more cultural will appear here next time I promise! Farewell my Yantai buds xx Take care everyone, Helena xxx

Celeb spotting.... Me!

... actually hit the children, but the kids are never ever that bad! At lunchtimes (if I go!) then I get all the little kids sitting around me. Then they mutter at each other and poke the kid who's best at English and finally come out with some bizzare question like 'Teacher, do you like bananas?' 'Um... no... not really...' and then the muttering starts again! Anyway enough from me!!! Hope everyone is well! Talk soon, Helena :)
