Mmm Lovely Beachiness

Day 81 - We had arranged for Nhan to meet me at my hotel for 7am before the bus picked us up, but when he wasn't there at 7:20, I started to think he had stood me up. It all worked out fine as we got going to Mui Ne - him with a massive grin on his face (which remained the whole time we were there) and also two baguettes filled with some Vietnamese concoction for breakfast! The bus journey was bumpy but gave amazing views of the Central Highlands with the clouds resting amongst the hills. We ...

Crazy Carpetting down Sand dunes

OK So on Saturday Morning, we left Saigon to make our way to Mui Ne, a city on the coast. WE had bought our open tour ticket, so we jsut have to tell them the day before and then the bus comes to pick us up. So we showed up in the morning, and once again, due to very hard communication in english, we were very confused of waht was going on. NO one seemed to know where our bus was. All the travel agencies are on one street and ALL the tours leave from there. There are a lot of buses at 8 am ev...

Hello Ocean!

We were finding ourselves missing the coast so were happy to leave bustling Saigon behind for the quiet coastal town of Mui Ne. The area is famed for it's production of fermented fish sauce which you really can smell on your way in. We hopped off the bus in what looked like a liekly area for cheap accom on the beach... and spent the next 45 minutes trudging around with our bags, finally breaking down and hopping on teh back of two scooters (which is no easy task when your bag weighs almost as...

Mui Ne - one long beach! with a lot to see!

... eventually arrived at Heip Hoa (in the lonely planet but has recently added mod cons like air con and cable tv). We sacrificed the swimming pool but still had a beach front location (the ocean was the best swimming pool anyway) and with rooms just as nice as sunrise we paid $17 - perfect!
Our lovely xe om driver 'Bi' gave us his card and we agreed to ring him for a sand dunes tour in a few days time. We spent the rest of the afternoon chilling on the ...

Crossing the divide between North and South

... conclusion that 12 hours on a soft bed on a bus was more desirable than the same but on a plain wooden bed on the train. A decision we came to appreciate all the more when we later found out that that cheap section of the train (which wasn’t actually all that cheap anyway) with the hard beds was the pits with cockroaches and all sorts keeping the passengers company. Plus there’s always a reason for things like this happening. So we headed back to the hotel to pack as our ...

Don't go cutting down other people's trees

We had a very brief stop here, just 2 nights but it was beautiful, lovely beach with palm trees and pretty quiet. We had intended on learning to kite surf but it turned out to be more expensive than expected, and our trip to the kite shop was interrupted by an ongoing tree-related neighbour's dispute, which was getting rather violent so we sneaked out whilst we could!

We had ...

The Tour to "Hell on Earth"

... mission of the Marines at the base was to prevent the Northern soldiers from going South on the Ho Chi Minh trail. In the Tet Offensive of 1968 Khe Sanh was used as a decoy to move American forces out of the south while the North targeted Saigon. About 500 US Marines died and 10,000 northern soldiers died during the conflict. Now the Khe Sanh site is coffee and rubber plant plantations. There is a small museum ...

... he returned he was looking slightly more pink, maybe he was embarrassed at how he acted on our first meeting! and so, armed with a nut cracker, i proceeded to wrench limbs, crack bone, and suck flesh. like some neandarthol from 1 million BC! anyway, having been disgusted by her first impressions of my meal brid soon saw the look of delight on my face as i played with / battered my food and decided she too wanted a shot. so i reluctantly gave up one of the massive ...

Properly seeing the effects of the "American" war

... br>
Anyway, so we made our way to Dong Ha...

We checked into a very nice hotel, hired a moped (sorry mum!) and went exploring! We had a rubbish map of the DMZ but managed to find most of the places we wanted to see. It was weird seeing all the craters and military debris (eg shells, tanks, etc!). There were loads to see but the most impressive (although I'm not sure that's the right way to describe it) was the Truong Son National Cemetery ...

One Day in Mui Ne

Today Crystal and I planned our day late last night before going to sleep after a long bus ride to Mui Ne and finalized everything over breakfast this morning on the beach. Our guest house is right on the sand.
Firstly, it is much too windy and the water very choppy with a strong current to go windsurfing this morning... crossed that thought off.
We then decide to rent a moto bike from the guest house and do our own tour of Mui Ne. Our ...
