... home (in a small courtyard setting). We sat on small stools and drank our beers out of the popcorn tubs next to a guy that lives in the home. He began talking to us in Chinese, and the only things I could really understand were "Where are you from?" and "Go China!" Through hand gestures, we figured he was telling us about the moon festival, and he was saying something about tomorrow (which would have been the day of the festival). He kept ...

Ecouler les jours heureux!

To the sea, at last!

I meant to go to Qingdao as soon as I got to Jinan. It's because I miss the sea. Living in Wuhan was ****** in this respect. I grew up next to the ocean and find it comforting to know it is nearby, even if I can't see it. In Wuhan the nearest coast is 12 hours by train. Coming to Shandong was a relief. Getting to Qingdao felt like a weight being let off my shoulders. That is the effect the sight of the sea had on me.

I think ...

Birthplace of Daoism and China's best beer

After classes were over, our program spent two days in Qingdao, home to world-famous Tsingtao beer, sailing of the 2008 Olmpics and Laoshan mountain, birthplace of daoism. This is the capitol city of Shandong Province and convinced me that Shandong is one of the best province in China. The city is huge, 7 or 8 million people, and I didn't see a single bit of it that ...

Beaches and Beer

... 1947 and it's said that he fled to Taiwan from that building. That's pretty interesting! Before we went inside the building we went down to the beach. There were LOADS of brides and grooms having their pictures taken!!! It was crazy! There were lots of food stands and knick-knack vendors and it was a nice beach so we decided to go back there the next day. We went up to the Huashi Lou building and in the courtyard outside ...

Clothing Trends

... I've only seen women wearing these. Some look homemade, made from bed sheets. One girl, Donna, wore Pooh Bear cuff protectors, most are just white cloth, though some are made to match the jacket. We've written about a Christmas sweater tradition in the States, that annual outing to secure a festive outfit. Well in China the most popular winter garment is not the sweater but long underwear. Beginning in October there were huge, billboard sized ...

The Stone Dragon: China's Great Wall

... of Braille. We were lucky that it was not so crowded and that the day turned out to be so beautiful. We worked up quite a sweat maneuvering through the steps, but a gentle cool breeze at the watchtower summits kept our temperatures down. Looking out into the spiky mountains, I could see the Wall diligently following each dip and rise, like a line of obedient army ants. Still, even along the next ridge over, the Wall's grey, sometimes crumbling appearance made it seem like a ...
