... that are already accustomed to human interaction, which would be beneficial to the zoos in that the sloths wouldn't remain furtive balls of fur stuck up at the top of a tree where the visitors can't even see them properly, and which would benefit the sloths in that the zoos would no longer hire hunters to go out and trap wild animals for their exhibits. At present, however, the Costa Rican government is refusing to allow such a scheme to progress as it is ...

Paraiso, Costa Rica tropicalcr... a month earlier during Easter, the streets were crowded with people from San Jose, resulting in late night stabbings and drunken brawls. Lucky for us, we didn't find this out until we were somewhere else. Anyways, the beaches here are extremely beautiful, not to mention they had some pretty big surf. The only problem with the surf was, like ...

This river is small by most people's standards (just 10 to 15 meters), so one consideration was overhanging tree branches. Fly fishing requires different methods of casting, and here we often relied on "roll casts", a technique that allows the caster to extend the fly line without a traditional back cast, which would undoubtedly end up in a tree. And we ...

It's a great way to get away from the standard tourist fare and experience a part of life that undoubtedly is very common for the locals. I was really becomming comfortable with driving in the hills. After dinner dark had decended and I had no trouble navigating the twists and turns back to Peace Lodge. My next post will cover Day 3, our final time at La Paz and our beautiful drive to the La Fortuna/Arenal area.

Puerto Viejo, Costa Rica tropicalcr... Every cabbie in a 10 block radius knew him, waved to him, or honked at him. He put on my backpack, led me to a place for electronics for a memory card, showed me a good cheap place to eat and even cheaper margaritas, led me to the tourism bureau for a good map - something I've wanted for 3 days - and then commenced educating me on how to get to Tortuguero via a couple different busses for under $15 rather than shell out a ...
cariari, Costa Rica neonguy... loaded us and the boards into the bed of the truck and drove to the beach. Gerald gave us a quick demonstration of how to stand up on the board, then led us out into the water. That was it; no release forms, no safety lectures, no further discussion of technique besides paddle, push up, stand. No wetsuits or rash guards, either, which meant a painful rest of the weekend for Lydia's belly. I felt unexpectedly anxious gazing through the haze at the clear blue surf. I've ...
