... gardener is so fussy that all the gravel surrounding the access paths was raked in patterns. There was a young lady in a beautiful Kimino and a bride and groom in the gardens. It was almost deserted, a big change from the other cities/sights we have been to. Have to say that the Europe syndrome is starting to set it i.e. the equivalent of cathedral fatigue. In Japan this means - temples, shrines, pagodas, big Buddhas, old palaces and houses. ...

... Canal City before walking back to our hotel. We were pretty exhausted after a day of walking and shopping so we relaxed for a couple of hours before heading out for dinner. The train to Yanagawa took about 45 minutes. When ...

... Mt Aso is active and was currently smoking so they had got a no go zone for a kilometre around the volcano which was a shame. There is a chairlift which takes you right to the crater rim but this was obviously closed. Everywhere was so green with hills and craters everywhere. We climbed up a lot of steps to reach the top of one old crater. From here we had a great view of the smoking volcano. We then walked around the ...

... When you arrive, the beds are packed away and they prepare them for you later. There was a low table and we had green tea, a teapot and a hot water container. Through some doors was a seating area, a bit like a conservatory. Then there was an outdoor balcony with more seating looking out into the forest. It was amazing. There were the traditional yukata robes and a little jacket that you wear when staying so we quickly changed. The ryokan had 6 private onsen for guests ...
