... week, so he decided to stay on the boat while Zoe went caving and kayacing. We both watched the sunset over the bay between having a lovely seafood lunch and dinner.

The following day we watched the floating village, where people live in houses on bamboo poles and plastic drums. We then had more cruising around the bay before returning to Hanoi in the afternoon.
Halong Bay, Vietnam zoeandgigs... foods or fruit that can be peeled. I eat only vegetarian or seafood anyway. The seafood is so fresh that I am certainly not going hungry. Today, Mr. Dung invited Tuyen and I to lunch along with Ms. Trang from the Hanoi Indochina Junk office. We went to a lovely local restaurant. The dishes were brought to the table in steaming water. That is the first time I had seen that!

I had a very adventuresome meal. I tried my best to taste ...
Hong Gai Vietnam, Quảng Ninh, Vietnam nsevers... in a certain fake watch fetish despite them being over all a bit of a disappointment. Full of not so delightfully tacky and sparkly Asian tat.
Lunch changed the general standard of the day though. Green Mango. Probably not a regular haunt for backpackers but a bit of indulgence every so often never hurt anyone. And to justify our splurge it still only cost us about £5. Including an after lunch cocktail!
The day concluded with warnings about storms/typhoons and an introduction ...
Halong Bay, Vietnam ciaradoonerush... to a beautiful pristine village and culture raise. But there is generator powered satellite tv in almost every little house this village already. I imagine that children and adults can be learning with XOs instead of watching tv!

When the Contributors Program approved my proposal for this project, Adam Holt wrote: "keep us in the loop towards carefully floating your village into the 21st century."

Yes indeed. And it has come to pass.:)

Halong Bay, Vietnam nsevers... motoring after a while. Then we sailed off to find our mooring for the night and a pre-dinner swim. The swim involved jumping off the top deck - a good 20 foot. Big points to Emma for being first girl in (and the only one that didn’t need her hand held) all be it producing a quite unique noise on route down, something between a scream and squeal.

We had lucked out, the food was great, a good few beers and a really nice bunch of people ...
Halong Bay, Vietnam thebirds... to take them all the way to the island off the coast, were suitably ****** off to find that all their ticket entitled them to was the coach journey alone and were forced to pay again for the boat ride!
The journey out to the cave was lovely with a big (if very simple) lunch being laid on, watching these giant rocky outcroppings slowly go past was really nice!
We were then taken through some natural limestone caves on foot, these were really ...
Halong Bay, Vietnam flash101... some Oreos. Although twice the price than on the
mainland they're worth it – and the girls pick up trash that they
find floating on the water. You have to support that! Although
there are a lot of junk boats on the water – the bay is so huge
that it doesn't feel overcrowded and having other boats out there
adds to the atmosphere. As the sky turns pink against the rocks there
is no doubt about it HaLong Bay is a gorgeous spot.

Halong Bay, Vietnam cyril.gallandHalong Bay

The journey from Hanoi to Halong Bay was hellish. I had booked a bus from my hotel to depart around 8am for a midday arrival. After twenty or so minutes of the journey I had that constant nagging feeling you get when you know you've forgotten something, you can't remember what it is, but you're pretty sure it was important. After much bag fondling and frantic pocket slapping I realised the culprit was my passport ...
Halong Bay, Vietnam peroberts... to cap the day off.

8th July
the next day the boat brought us back towards the bay a different way then we had come thru more islands and another floating village. We all headed back to Hanoi.
