Barcelona Summer Trip 2009

Left sunny England ( Not ) for the lovely toasty warm Spain.
Spent many days wandering the city and looking at various buildings.
The beaches were nice, a little dirty and sometimes chilly.
Nearly got pick-pocketted but managed to avoid it at the last moment.
Lin fell in love with Gaudi's work and took far too many photos :)
I did a Nitrox course and discovered why people wear full length wetsuits when diving sometimes ( 16 degrees is bloody cold )
Oh well , back to London ...

Day 14: Geneva to Barcelona

As you know from yesterday's blog, my day started at 4 am when the airport opened and I was no longer able to sleep. So I went downstairs and plugged into the internet. I got a lot done, including booking my flight to AZ for the end of the month (yippeeee!) I will be spending one night in NYC along the way, as it actually saved me a few hundred dollars to do it that way. So I booked a hostel there for the night (NOT doing a repeat of Geneva, thank you!) As I got on the plane later that mornin...

Day 17: Hostel in Barcelona

I didn't get to bed until about 1:30 am, then was up with the gang at 5:00 am. Yawn! Good thing I'm resting all day! Because yesterday was St. Patrick's Day, the police are still on the streets, breaking up groups of partiers. One of the guys had only been back a little while and had been hit by the cops with nightsticks. So he was saying to take a taxi to the bus station (the metros are not open at this time in the morning and it is about a 20 minute walk or so.) But 4 chinese students pulli...

Fantastic Location, Great Place!

from BringHomeTroops
My husband and I stayed for 8 nights in November 2003. We got a good rate (98 Euros including breakfast) on the H10 site. The location was fantastic. We had easy access to everything and we walked just about everywhere from its central location. If you don t like walking, it sits on top of the center of Barcelona transportation so you can easily get around via metro and bus. Even if you don t end up staying here, book something in the vicinity. My overall experience at the hotel was quite positive but there are some things you should be aware of. Room size... I was expecting a room similar to the room shown in photos and tour provided on the H10 Web site. When we checked in, we got a room about half the size. We could barley turn around in the room much less fit our luggage in there. The bathroom was depressingly small too. They explained they didn t have a larger room available, but might the next day. Reluctantly, we stayed one night. (I kind of wanted to leave) Well I m glad we stayed. The next day we were moved to one of the larger rooms with a couch and a much larger bathroom. It faced the back so it was quiet, and the view into the courtyard through large windows was quite pretty. As it turns out, less than a quarter of the rooms at the hotel are of the larger size depicted on their site (and in other internet photos). Just be aware and ask for a different room. The larger room was comfortable. The beds were comfortable, the sheets were really nice, as were the thick nice quality bath towels (for the price). The shower pressure was good and plenty of hot water. The room was clean enough (not perfect but I m pick y and had no problem staying there). We didn t have a problem with noisy neighbors, as did another reviewer (maybe we were just too tired from walking all over the city to notice). The buffet breakfast was really nice (even had soy milk if you asked) and it was in a beautiful room overlooking the plaza. On the same level as the breakfast room, there was a little spread of drinks, pastries, and fruit for free throughout the day, and one computer you could use to get onto the internet and check your e-mail if you wanted to (no charge). We really liked the front desk staff (Jordi, Alberto, and others). They all spoke English quite well and were really friendly. They were patient answering all of our tourist questions and were fun to talk to. (I m pretty talkative and they never seemed bothered). I really liked these guys and made our trip that much better. By the way, we loved Barcelona! We really liked this hotel and would defiantly stay here again. Feel free to e-mail me if you have any questions!

Good location but disappointing

from tadvisoruser
We stayed at this hotel in early December 2003. The location was perfect - easy access to all tourist attractions (would definitely recommend the Bus Touristic as a quick and cheap way to get to all the major sites - bus stop on the doorstep of the hotel).

After staying at a H10 hotel a few months ago in Gran Canaria, this one was a bit of a let down. Rooms were fairly small and a bit rough around the edges. Rooms were also not very well sound proofed as we could hear everything going on in adjacent rooms. The cleaners were not exactly quiet first thing on a morning so the noise could get a bit annoying.

Having said all this, the rooms were clean, staff friendly and the hotel is a good base for touring the city.

November delight

Please bear in mind that every review is relative to the writers unique circumstances and world view. We have just spent three nights at this hotel and were overall quite satisfied with our stay. Situation of hotel in the centre of the city gave us access to La Rambla, Port Vell, el Corte Inglais, and Hard Rock Cafe within easy walking distance (once my sister had taking off her high heeled shoes). Metro and Bus Touristic at this time of year were easy to access and allowed us to reach all other interesting areas. Good discounts to attractions given by using Bus Touristic as long as you don't lose the little booklet they give you. Hotel staff were courteous and welcoming on arrival with a glass of sparkling wine and nibbles while you registered. Rooms are compact but spotlessly clean and well serviced. The bed was a little hard for my personal taste. Air conditioning was controllable which was welcome as even in November the rooms felt hot. Breakfast had the ability to suit ALL tastes and anything from croissants and fresh orange juice to Bucks Fizz and smoked salmon / scrambled egg. There were no tea/coffee making facilities in the room but this was offset by the fact that a buffet in the comfortable bar area provided free facilities for making tea and coffee. Also available in a limited supply but equally free was Sparkling white wine, red wine, water, cakes and ham and cheese rolls. I can heartily recommend a stay at this pleasant hotel.

Excellent hotel in central Barcelona

from JBBelfast
We stayed at this hotel for 5 nights. We found the hotel excellent. The location was very good, at the top of the Ramblas, and close to restaurants, shops and tourist locations. The train to/from the main airport was just metres from the hotel, as was the metro and bus stations. There was always complementary champaign available at reception each evening, as well at breakfast time. The staff were very friendly suggesting tapas bars and restaurants to visit. The bedroom was exactly as per the brochure picture with wooden floors, fresh flowers and a balcony looking over the square, and was very quiet.

Would definitely recommend hotel to friends and family and will return to the hotel.

In the heart of Barcelona

from A TripAdvisor Member
We had booked 3 nights in this hotel but due to a flood, they could not accommodate us on the day we arrived. The staff were very apologetic about this and had arranged for us to stay in a sister hotel and called a taxi to take us there.

We returned to the hotel the next day and were given a charming room with small balcony overlooking the Placa Catalunya. We had read in the Rick Steeves guide book that this was an impersonal business hotel but we did not find this to be the case. Our room was on two levels which gave it character, the staff were very friendly and helpful - and spoke English - and the breakfasts were tremendous - a wonderful buffet in a gorgeous baroque dining room - champagne included!

We found the location perfect for us - the Placa Catalunya is a huge square with fountains at the top of Las Ramblas. We could walk to the Barier Gottica within minutes and could also walk easily to many of the main Gaudi sites. We would definitely recommend this moderately priced hotel.
