The next morning we took the train to Gyeongju, a city also called "museum without a roof" for its many tourist sites, temples, shrines, etc. In the morning we had a bit of a chit chat with a French traveler at the train station and then made were on our way to Gyeonngju. After arriving there we had our first break of our so far perfect weather history of the trip. It started raining a bit and our original plan to rent a bicycle again for exploring the sights for the day was impossible since ...

We woke up pretty early to finalise our packing and have enough time for breakfast. However, we seem to take a while in the mornings and so we ended up catching a cab instead (Lucky i didn't put any more money into my t-card). We got there with plenty of time to spare and so we got some breakfast and caught the KTX to Dongdaegu (then transfering to Gyeongju). It didn't take long at all to get there, about 1.5 hours, and the train was pretty comfortable, similar to the ones in Taiwan. At D...

... making was influenced by Indian swords. It is interesting that such a remote kingdom would be influenced by an empire so far away. People no longer constantly bow and thank, as I had gotten used to in Japan. Having gotten tired of East Asian food, I defaulted to McDonald's. 7,200 wons for a meal and a sandwich. Cheaper than Japan. Gyeongju is a small town of 300,000 people. The major industry is tourism. Buildings are short. Despite its ...
Gyeongju, Korea Rep. muratcan... seemed a bit overkill. But then they pulled out the pop songs and the adults really got going. Koreans go absolutely ballistic for singing, dancing, and karaoke. Even when you watch Korean music videos and live concerts, they put the words on the bottom so that you can sing along. And when someone's singing, everyone else is clapping---usually while swaying side-to-side. So the "kids" (all the Korean-American kids raised in ...
Andong, Korea Rep. connieyc... was a little gross. But after all that hype, we were excited to see the bell and hear it ring. It's quite a large and attractive bell with pictures engraved on it, but we were dissapointed that we couldn't hear it ring. They don't ring it anymore and instead, they play an audiorecording of the bell ringing every hour. Kind of a let down. After the bell and museum, we went to the Seokgulam Grotto and Bulguksa ...
Kyongju, Korea Rep. connieycUp early and onto the train wondering if I was going to be staying a temple tonight or searching for a place to stay when the train arrives. I was in luck and heard back from the temple but had a few hours to kill before hopping the bus to get there so I wandered around Gyeongju, had some lunch and continued on my search for a sauna. I actually found one but the lady didn't ...
Gyeongju, Korea Rep. bethj... incline steeper than the stairs at the Erickson household. We ate simple vegetarian meals, and were forced to clean every single speck of food from our plates. We woke the next morning at 4am to the chants of a monk, and made the steep climb up the mountain in the dark. Brrr! Once in the main temple we bowed and chanted for 30 minutes, and then had a 30 minute sitting meditation. After breakfast and morning training, we went on a hike into the ...
Gyeongju, Korea Rep. brianneinjapan... him and off we went! He kept shouting on the phone (probably to Mrs Taxi Driver) and hanging up. Then talked loudly to us, we think about the traffic jam, not sure. After he asked a few people where we were going we arrived at the motel, after we reversed through a 'fringe' curtain. It was not the cheapest place we've stayed, but it is the best room we have ever had!! The (ickle) hallway light was automatic, the bathroom was huge and had a fancy power shower with ...
