So, after looking at Chiang's old villa (yep, still there), we sat in a park for a while and then just continued down the mountain on an old path. It was paved, but the further we went, the clearer it became that it had fallen into complete disuse. We came upon a huge manmade pit with a tower of stones in the centre. "A bear pit", I joked. ... br> TS is big. Big and crowded. Big, Hot, and crowded. It is a pulsing, quivering mass of humanity, 1 in 20 of which is trying to sell you something. But it is interesting.

The forbidden city is the oldest, most impressive manmade place I have ever been in my life by a wide margin. It is hugely crowded, but all the more impressive for the number of people this 600 some year old complex of buildings can accommodate. Will post ...
