Alabama's hidden gem?

Who knew I'd enjoy Montgomery, AL as much as I did...

It all began when we pulled into our hotel. I've come to expect a very standard room by now, but when we got to our floor and opened the door, I was pleasantly greeted by a really nice room. They had recently renovated the hotel, and clearly hired some sort of Feng Shui decorator. I loved it. Everything was crisp and clean, but with warm touches ...

... with a waterfall in the background.

It was profoundly moving to be in Montgomery with the trolley and the many placards placed around the city, refreshing our recollection of this difficult time in our country's history. I am so glad Marney gave us one of the most memorable and educational experiences we've had in almost two years on the road.

That night, to top it all off, Marney made us dinner and had two of her ...

Young hunts and fishes bringing dinner to the table and filling their freezer every year with venison. Suzy and Young are as down to earth with their hunting and gardening and canning as they are elegant in their beautiful home. They represent the two worlds with ease as they arrange for us to go to their farm, "Glen Thistle"
Off we go in the SUV about an hours drive to a long unpaved driveway. Through ...

Andy and I didn’t even go back to Gunter Hill one night but spent the night in Crazy Fish right on Marney’s road after a long and fun day discovering the history of Montgomery(another entry), having another delicious dinner of a mixed greens soup and a curried sweet potato soup while meeting the friends for a rousing good time. There is simply so much more to do and learn that we must come back and spend more time with cousin Marney. .

Getting soaked in Montgomery

I dropped Luba off at the Savannah airport this morning at 5am. It was hard to see her off. We had the best time ever.

I had taken all side roads today all the way from Savannah. Traveled almost 600 miles before stopping for the day. I rode mostly on US 80 the entire day. I love riding on two lane roads. Its a great way to see the country side.

Stopped in Montgomery, Al. It just will not stop raining. Need a break. Waiting for the weather to ...

A Day on the Farm

Believe it or not, there are 54 Championship Holes at the Capitol Hill Golf Course in Prattville, AL that are part of the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail. Jerry took the opportunity to get in a round of golf and was amazed at the beauty and pristinely maintained course.

While Jerry was hitting a small ball around Prattville, Alex & I spent some time in the pool to cool off. Bella used to jump into the pool to me when she was a puppy, but I couldn't ...

Out in the Middle of Nowhere

We left the Gulf Coast today and headed into Alabama to visit with Aunt Kathy and Uncle D. I used to live with Aunt Kathy and Uncle D in Florida. But I haven't been to visit then in Alabama for the last 5 years. What a great reunion.

My cousin Jackie cooked up some homemade lasagna and these ...

... got there and had two pieces of peach cobbler specially made by the owner left over. They gave it to us - if good southern manners allowed, we'd have licked the bowl - fantastic Georgia peaches. Understanding we're heading north the waitress gives us her best directions and warns us of aggressive cops in the neighboring county. Traveling north along secondary highways (random note: they encourage u-turns in the little median areas ...

The past lingers on

... that began the Civil War. Montgomery today is home to the nation's first Civil Rights Memorial, chronicling the events of the struggle for racial equality between 1955-1968. From Dexter Avenue Baptist Church Martin Luther King Jr directed the bus boycott that sparked the civil rights movement. Montgomery has many distinctive, historic houses and buildings. The State Capitol was built in 1851. Old ...
