Hassan and his family lived as desert nomads for generations, but with the increasing lack of water in the desert,
Hassan’s father had to leave his beloved nomadic lifer to provide for
his family. He did this by working as a guide and camel driver, later
helped by the young Hassan, who learnt English, French and Italian from
the travellers he accompanied.
More recently Hassan has worked for himself, giving travellers an independent choice and the possibility of enjoying...

... We boarded our camels, rode a few minutes, and stopped to watch the sunrise from atop our camels.
Then we rode back out of the desert. I wasn't sore at first . . . but about halfway in every step Rodney took hurt my legs, bottom - everything. Especially going downhill. I'm still a little sore! As we left out on Saturday night, one of the guys called out "See you tomorrow, inshallah!" (god ...
... These camels had one hump and some were carrying baskets with our water and food supplies inside. We found the camels were larger than we expected after being gently raised up into the air by the graceful creatures. My camel was feminine looking and had a nose piercing and long eyelashes. The camels have graceful front legs that walk like supermodels on the catwalk and gangly back legs that look all un-coordinated. The feet look like spongey dogs paws. All the camels ...
Merzouga, Morocco inoursuitcase... air of the desert. The guides woke us up before the sun so we could climb a hill behind our camp to watch the sun rise. Gorgeous! We then made our way back into town, had breakfast, and started our 11 hour bus ride back to Rabat. It was an amazing weekend- one of the coolest experiences I have had. Now I am back to reality with a full five day work week. Eeek! Hope you enjoy the pictures and I will see all of you soon. Love you!
Merzouga, Morocco clairtenney... next morning. Within seconds of hopping back on the camel, I realized that my butt is the wrong shape to fit over the hump of a camel. It hurt from the trip over the day before. I guess that the camel still has it worse, though. Upon reaching the hotel, we were looking forward to a nice shower that was cold but did the job. We got back in the car for our drive to Fez. By this time it was clear that our ...
Merzouga, Morocco travelbee... upset that Doc is stealing their clientele. Then they write letters to the Ministry of Agriculture saying bad things about Doc or put pressure on politicians to get Doc out of the country. So the problem has become even more complicated. This happened a few years ago and Doc closed the clinic down. A day or two later, enough upset had been created that a solution was quickly reached and the clinic was reopened. Because of his previous ...
Merzouga, Morocco tamerin... yourself, you went out into the desert with a roll of toilet paper and a lighter with which to burn the used TP. The key was to go far enough so that you got some privacy, but not too far that you got disoriented and lost. Hamid told us that his worst experience as a guide was when one of his group members went too far to heed nature's call and got lost. Apparently, once you lose your bearing in the dunes you are hooped. Hamid ...
Sahara Desert, Morocco paulandmel... our constant picture stops and some logistical problems with the map, the directions, a couple of wrong turns, etc. No big deal of course, hard to be stressed out about any of that when you are navigating your way through such beautiful country. The actual desert did not begin until further south, closer to the Algerian border. The town we were headed to was Merzouga, about 30 kilometers from the border with Algeria. By the time we neared Merzouga it was ...
Merzouga, Morocco gracielastanley... couple of card games before braving our cold beds. (I had on just about every piece of clothing in my backpack, save my bathing suit.) Shannon and Jon told a few jokes and Tim and Kristy gave us lessons in marketing. Somehow we made it through the night, though it was only Shannon who got any sleep!. The four of us had mattresses on the ground side-by-side, but Shannon tossed and turned all night, kicking both Jon and Martin and pulling the blankets off Jon and me. We also had out ...
