... for the trade route to and from Arabia, with spice, silk and slave caravans passing through it. In 106 AD, the Romans conquered the Nabataeans and annexed it to their empire. Several different styles contribute to Petra’s uniqueness, including the Romans, Greeks, Mesopotamians, and Egyptians. After reaching its historic peak, Petra was gradually abandoned and after the 14th Century it was lost to the West until a Swiss traveler ...
Petra, Jordan boydandrose... as I climbed sideways a bit on the rock, I stumbled upon the Roman Amphitheater! I took the stairs down rather than continuing to descend on what would soon become open, vertical rock face. When I got to the base of the Roman Amphitheater, I realized that because there was a fence keeping people from getting in (yes I was trespassing), that same fence would make it hard for me to get out. Using my new-found climbing skills, I hopped over a 10 foot-deep ravine ...
Petra, Jordan richfrohl... western style toilets. I don't even require toilet paper to be included, the toilet doesn't need to flush, it can run, i don't even care; i just need a seat!

Today i'm going to see the lost city of Petra. The rest of my tour saw it yesterday on a guided tour but i stayed behind at the hotel and rested and slept because i was feeling really unwell and was not up to the massive amount of heat and walking that was involved in ...
Wadi Musa, Jordan danii555... the biggest Roman city (yes Roman city) ruins I have seen. We enjoy the delightful Arab Bagpipe player's version of Auld Lang Syne in the stone Auditorium, no I do not jest nor have slipped into alternative universe. I have accpeted that If you are Scottish bagpipes will find you no matter where you are in the world, you cannot run, you cannot hide.

Day 3, the tour clouds part and becomes truly AWESOME, head to the ...

Wadi Musa, Ma'an, Jordan eyre... and the carved facade was golden and brilliantly contrasted against the mountain. Feeling rewarded for our trek we sat and gazed at it while taking on more water and resting. There were fewer tourists up here as it was later in the day and hard work to get to. By this time it was after 5pm and we headed down again which was a lot easier than coming up but having walked miles today we were getting very tired and made the slow trek back up through the ruins we had walked ...
Petra, Jordan kasnsqueak... available at the time. Really mind-boggling. Despite Bonnie's little bug, she made it through the day, but i have to say that for me, the highlight of the day happened in the last half-hour we were at the site. Bonnie rode a donkey to the exit, and this I had to video. (I'll leave the ass jokes up to you). I chose to walk, when the donkey suggested that perhaps he should be riding me to the exit.) Sorry for the cheap humour, folks, but you know how I like to entertain myself ...
Petra, Jordan liliens...
Wadi Musa, Jordan brisko... was trying to interest us in her necklaces became curious as we were taking a picture of the kids holding our stuffed ogopogo. We took a picture with her, then of course she wanted to keep it. We realized we were in a fix now, so acquiesced when she pointed to the whistle on my backpack and asked for it (another one of Andy's safety measures for the mountains). We don't usually give anything to the children who are often asking for money, pens, candies etc as the general ...
Wadi Musa, Jordan hamiltonfamily... bunch who think military service was wonderful and all the stuff they did was great..... Dying to argue with them but I refrained.

Got to Petra at 8 in the morning when the light is at it's best. Quite a lot of tour groups. Split up and I headed down the hill by myself to get ahead of the tour groups, now that I'd had my free tour yesterday. Spent the day hiking up small mountains which I said I'd never do in my life but you get to see the place, which is very ...
