Howdy Chairman Mao

We left Tokyo and arrived - in the middle of the night here in Guangzhou, China (aka Canton) - I'm already wondering what happen to the China I knew 20 years ago. I know that things change but this is true transformation. Just looking out the window of the airplane I could see the glow of lights - a new world below. The "smell" here is uniquely China, and I can't really explain what that means but China just has a particular scent and it's still the same. I am happy to report we've hooked up ...

Missing: Blue Sky

Well we've had an interesting day trying to figure out how to travel out of this city and get ourselves to Hong Kong. Thank God we have Anthony with us because my Chinese would not work here! The pollution is unbelievable - I knew it would be bad - I had read all about it but until you walk around in it for a day and realize that you can't see buildings two blocks away from each other - you don't really get it. We went past a park today and you could get your picture taken and printed right a...

Habitaciones espaciosas y buen trato para familias

from peter_homefield

Value for money

from Zauber
We decided to stay in Victory Hotel after going through the hotel list in Guangzhou. We were looking for affordable comfort and convenience (near to the subway station) for our 3 nights stay there. We were a bit skeptical at first given that the hotel is locally run. But the hotel itself turned out to be better than expected. The location, however is a bit of a let down.

We paid a bit more (about USD 60) to stay in executive non-smoking room which surprisingly is as good as five-star standard. The room is spacious, extremely clean and had a stylish decor (they had just renovated the executive floor a couple of years ago). The beds are fat and cushy with clean white sheets. They have also international channels on their TV, which is not a given for locally run 4 star hotels. One gets to have a good rest after a long day outside. It was so comfortable that it was hard to drag ourselves out of bed everyday.

Less than desirable is the location of the hotel. Though subway station is indeed within walking distance as stated in their advertisements, one has to pass through a construction site which is muddy and cumbersome to walk on damp days. Even on a perfect day, one has share the narrow dusty pathway with local hawkers and traders (the hotel is near to a large wholesale market for Chinese herbs and dried groceries). At the same time, there are no eatries or convenience shops in the vinicity. There is also not much choices for food in the hotel itself. It is hence better for one to take their meals outside the hotel.

All in all, this hotel is still value for money. To overcome the problem on its location, one can choose to travel by taxis. The cost of travelling by taxis is relatively cheap.

Quest'albergo è di sicuro un vincente!

from MarcAble

Sure is a Victor!

We stayed for seven nights and eight days. The hotel is just fabulous. Excellent service, rooms are really up to date. It even has a water purifier w/ reverse osmosis technology and it really saved us a lot since we spend so much buying bottled water. Their laundry service is cheap, which I wished I knew from the start. The location is what I loved most. Aside from being close to a French built Catholic Church, the park behind the hotel is uncomparable. The serenity of the surroundings after a hard days work plus the room's ambiance not to mention the foot massage room service is more than what I expected. Oh, just one thing, they aren't really experts in toasting bread.

Amazing value

from Boomer-Nurse
My husband and I stayed at the Victory for two nights in September 2006. This was towards the end of a month long vacation in which we travelled all over China and weathered many nights in assorted three and four star hotels. This was simply the best hotel for service, comfort and value. It is a older renovated hotel with lots of character situated on Shamian island by the Pearl river. Some judge hotels by the bathrooms but can bathrooms redeem worn and stained carpets? Not in my books. At the Victory the spotless rooms pass the bathroom AND carpet test.

We particularly liked the dispenser unit featuring hot and cold pure (reverse osmosis) treated water. The soft queen bed was a delight after enduring weeks of rock hard beds at other hotels.

Most of the staff spoke English and all were courteous and friendly. They stored our luggage for us after checkout and the young porter refused to accept a tip for this service. My only complaint would be that they do not offer a la carte breakfast in their western dining room , as I wanted only coffee and toast. However upon spotting me sitting with my husband while he had the buffet, the host quickly offered me a pot of tea gratis. Little touches. Isn't this what great service is all about?

The Victory is a quiet, solid, clean comfortable , unpretentious hotel in a great location. Amazing value.

Good value, great location

from adrianowitz
Highly recommended for guangzhou, staff was very friendly and helpfull and the location was great, rooms clean and well appointed and well priced. I will stay there again, also near the huangsha metro. The only down side was there is no good restuarants on Shamian island.

Loved the Victory

from A TripAdvisor Member
We loved the Victory Hotel!! The staff were awesome, the rooms above average and the location excellent. We were only in China for three days for a trade show, and this was a very easy hotel as well as reasonable priced. The staff spoke very good english, they were very helpful and polite, as well as going above and beyond with everything we needed. The location was also very tourist friendly, quiet and safe.

Perhaps my favorite thing about this hotel was that the airport pick-up that we had prearranged was at the airport to meet us even though our flight was over three hours late, and we were delayed almost an hour at bagage claim with lost luggage at 3am!!!!

We will definately stay at the Victory again.

Great Hotel on Shamian Island

from StarrySue
This is a nice hotel located on Shamian Island, small enough that you can walk around the perimeter and take in the sights of Guangzhou and the surrounding river. Small shops and restaurants on the island or walk on the footbridge 5 minutes to the main section for more variety. Nice service and great staff. The business center is lacking updated computers and high speed internet, but the usage rate is low. Third floor offers "Morning Tea" which is basically Dim Sum to us Westerners, seemed as though many locals dine here, pretty good. Beds are comfortable, breakfast buffet is good.

Friendly & good value

from MikeeUK
Excellent value with friendly staff and very comfortable rooms. Stayed in the annexe which is the cheaper part fo the hotel but had no complaints at all.

The streets that surround the hotel offer some respite from the bustle of the city but which is a matter of a short walk away

My second stay a year after the first and it will definitely be top of the list next time I stay in Guangzhou.

Excellent hotel and an excellent value

from bigjim
This was a great value. The upgraded room was nicely appointed, clean and comfortable. The staff was very helpful. This was to best value on this trip. I will definitely stay here in the future. The view is nothing special, but who goes to Guangzhou to look out the window? Good location, decent restuarants (stay away from the western breakfast buffet), gracious and accomodating staff, very nice sauna.

You won't regret staying here.
