The first thing I saw as I came out of the subway station in Guangzhou, China was a tree. This was reassuring. The second thing was a McDonald's. This too presented a certain familiarity but it was mixed with a sense of disappointment. Despite this, these two things (the tree in a park and McDonald’s) gave me a chance to rehydrate, compare costs against Australian (a Big Mac set was advertised for about $4AUD, it's probably $8 in Australia), and unwind ...

... a couple of blocks away and left my bag there! I had taken my small carry bag, but not the wheeled one - won't make that mistake again, as it got heavy very fast.

Anyway, I went off and had some lunch, then collected my bag, and got to the station really early. Sat and had coffee and read a book for a while, and was about 3rd in line when the check-in opened.

... to see a giant panda. So when we arrived back to the hotel and found a break in the weather, we decided to make a break for the zoo. We again hailed two taxis and it was a quick trip (and only $3 bucks!) to the Guangzhou Zoo. It is one of three biggest zoos in all of China, which originally sounded pretty good...

Shamian Island was built on a sandbar by both the British and French and used to be an important trading post. The architecture is decidedly European and very quaint. It was a peaceful experience to just walk along the cobblestone ways. The island used to house the U.S. Consulate and the hotel where all adoptive parents stayed - The White Swan.
