... Old Town and the opportunity for fantastic views and fresh mountain air comes from a great walk behind our hostel up Xiang Shan (Elephant Hill), passing gazebos en-route before descending to Black Dragon Pool Park with its peaceful lake and backdrop of the snow-capped Jade Dragon Snow Mountain.

During our stay in Lijiang we ate local dishes in New and Old Town along with a traditional Chinese Hotpot with the locals at a side ...

... many of the people are Tibetan, and all the road signs have Tibetan script as well as Chinese. When we arrived in Shangri-La we quickly found a hostel in the old town area, dropped our bags then headed out to eat. It turned out to be the worst hostel I have ever stayed at. We had no harnesses or other safety devices and it was totally vertical, so you had to lean back to move ...

... covered with what were clearly frequent rock falls and the number of accidents that we came across, one of which was really serios. Our driver was not good, but we made it back in one piece. The guesthouse for the night was nice, and Lijiang was a nice town, but it contained the usual tourist rubbish, shops and stalls and was busy, crowded and noisy. I'm so glad that we made a break from the group and stayed in Tiger Leaping Gorge for two nights. The others have all had three nights ...

The road to Shangrila

... early in the afternoon.

This turned out to be a wise decision as the new highway is not yet open (or perhaps is already closed for repairs?). Thus the road to Shangrila is far from a peaceful one. We’d barely got out of Lijiang than we were caught in a traffic jam which lasted most of the rest of the journey. Admittedly the road is one major problem. It’s a small single lane road which ...
