Lijiang is a maze of cobbled streets, rickety wooden buildings and canals.

Very easy to get lost, which we did, wandering through the lanes and alleys lined with stalls making and selling beautiful handcrafts and knick-knacks.

... tourist-attraction-city. Also at night-time the central market place and surrounding streets offer a weird and somehow uninviting party-atmosphere with drunk and loud Chinese (and also western, but those seem to be better accustomed to partying and the consequences).

Tiger Leaping Gorge

... and ended with a two and a half hour descent and re-climb of a very steep section to the Tiger Leaping Stone, making us sweat like in a sauna again. The views down at the Tiger Leap Rock were amazing though too. However, we had to pay some Yuan extra for the paths there, as those were maintained by local families and as a result quite adventurous (see pictures to get an idea) :-).

All in all the Tiger Leaping Gorge was a spectacular site and great outdoor ...

... J’ai trouvé ça assez curieux. Ces touristes-là sont les mêmes qu’on croise dans les rues de Shanghai, de Beijing ou de Guangzhou et qui n’en ont rien à foutre de croiser un énième laowai. D’autant plus que les étrangers ont beau être minoritaires, ils ne sont pas une espèce en voie de disparition à Lijiang.

Après deux ou trois jours passés à Lijiang à se frayer un passage à coups de coude dans les rues pavées, il était temps de passer à autre ...

... dishes, each completely different from the next. And Tony the carnivore absolutely loved it! Delicious marinated tofu, lotus flower roots, broccoli, bitter melon and scrambled egg, brown rice, potato rosti, stir fried julienned vegetables, corn, water spinach and garlic, famous Yunnan mushrooms to name a few and it was washed down with a clear delicate vegetable broth. Mmmmmm, salivating just now thinking about it all.
