Historical Traveler Reviews Grupotel Valparaiso Palace & Spa Palma

          Excellent Hotel

The Grupotel Valparaiso lies to the west of Palma. It is slightly outside the centre - probably a good 30 minute walk - but only 5 minutes and 8 euros in a taxi. The hotel is quiet with extensive gardens and 3 freshwater pools. There is an indoor heated pool and Spa which is free to hotel residents between 0900 - 2200.

Breakfast menu is extensive and excellent with top notch service. A wide range of freshly squeezed fruit juices is available.

There are 2 restaurants in hotel. One a Bistro type and the other gourmet and pricier. The Bistro restaurant service can be a little slow when it is very busy. In summer there is a poolside restaurant also.

There is one tennis court (not in top notch condition) and several paddle courts (tennis/squash mix type of game). All racquets and balls are lent out to guests.

All of the staff are helpful and friendly and really make you feel at home in the hotel.

Room furnishings are a little bit outdated but the rooms are so comfortable and spacious one doesn't really care about the decor being a little old fashioned. The views are super. Cathedral view is excellent but views at side of hotel are nice too.

It's pricey but worth it!!! I'll be going back.

Palma itself is a lovely city to explore. The old town is very interesting with a number of old courtyards, Arab baths, Palace and Cathedral. Several museums and art galleries.

We did lunch at Es Baluard contemporary art museum which has an outside terrace overlooking Palma Bay.

Tried several restaurants in town but if you see a nice looking Tapas Bar called "El Pilon" AVOID it. Has really gone downhill. Rip off prices for what we were served and the large bottle of mineral water was brought to the table uncapped so I think we might have been drinking tap!!!!

          Excellent and friendly service

The hotel is a true five star hotel, everything seems newly renovated. We had a spacious room with a balcony and a wonderful view overlooking Palma. The choice of the breakfast buffet was enourmous, the food quality very good. The staff is extremely friendly and goes out of their way to help you. We got for example a late checkout for free. As our room had been booked, they gave us a new room.

A true highlight is the recently renovated spa and indoor pool area with a touch of Asian atmosphere.

The location is very good in an upper class residential area, but you will need transport. I was told the walk to the center is 40 minutes. It looked like you had walk fast to do it in 40 min. We had a car, therefore I cannot comment on buses / taxis.

It certainly helped that we were lucky with the weather, 20 C and sunny in November

          Outstanding Hotel - 5* service

My self and my family have just spent 1wk in Grupotel Valparaiso Palace in Palma, spain, and it was an outstanding hotel, the rooms were spotless and clean and the staff were so friendly and caring.

The main breakfast is a hugh buffet (and I mean hugh!!), its got everything you can every ask for & the staff in the restuarants are very kind and welcoming. They can all speak very good english which definatly help us, and are so willing to help.

The hotel is based up a quite steep hill, (so you would need a taxis or car, unless you are fit and you can walk it) - it is very close to palma airport .

The hotel has marble flooring and free internet access to all its guests - it definatly seemed like to was 'the place to be' in palma - very high class.

Every room has 2 balconies over looking palma & the habour bays. There is also a free health spa that all guest can use with a indoor & outdoor heated swimming pool, sauna, gym etc.. and the staff are so friendly. When we went in the health spa in the evening it is very peaceful and relaxing (we were the only one;s in the pool - so we had the whole pool to ourselfs) - there provide you with dressing gowns & slippers fresh every day in your room & there is a direct lift, that goes straight down to the gym (so no one can see you in your swim wear - its very private).

I could not recommend this hotel enough - it was such great service & the rooms were great.

          Expensive but worth it

Not cheap, but a five star hotel that for once deserves the rating. We paid extra for a 'junior suite' but the standard rooms are excellent. Breakfast buffet was exceptionally extensive and beautifully presented. The crowning glory is the amazing set of three very large and scenic swimming pools (two outdoor one indoor) complete with saunas, waterfalls, fountains, aromatherapy, steam rooms and all the trimmings included in the room price. Staff all helpful and professional. Only drawback is location - wonderful views but a ten minute (seven Euro) hillside taxi ride from central Palma. Not at all a problem unless you really want to be central - but then you won't get the pools etc.

          Wonderful Valparaiso

I have just recently returned from a 5 day stay at this hotel and would thoroughly recommended it. The pool and spa areas were fabulous, the breakfast wonderful (the staff in the restaurant were extremely friendly and helpful) and the view from our balcony absolutely fantastic. The one and only down point was the wallpaper in our bedroom that had seen better days - apart from this, the bathroom was great and the room quiet and large. The hotel location was great for Palma - less than 5 minutes in a car - and a good 15 minute walk down a steepish hill to a great restaurant called "Woodys" on the harbour front. Will definately be staying here again!

Great pools, great views, nice rooms, mediocre service

Nice-sized rooms, all with terraces affording excellent views of the harbor, the city, and the surrounding hills. Large and reasonably well-appointed bathrooms. Two huge, attractive swimming pools with fountains and islands in the middle - may seem a bit Las Vegas to some, but lots of room to float around, nice chaises on bright sunny decks. Not five-star service - couldn't find someone to bring towels or take lunch or drink orders at the pools (though when we walked to the little restaurant facility down at the lower pool, we did get a nice lunch of grilled shrimp). Also concierge told us that a great tapas bar (La Bodeguilla) had definitely closed, but we found it ourselves and it was open and terrific. Very pleasant and abundant buffet breakfast. For fine room, view and pools within a short drive of town, you probably can't do better - price was fair, too (a miracle in these weak-dollar times).

          Almost perfect!

we have just spent a week here, and in the middle of january the weather was warm and sunny.

we had a junior suite on the third floor over looking the whole city and the harbour, it was a wonderful veiw. the hotel is situated high above palma in its own small park...every thing was first class, including the staff who were the friendliest i have ever encountered!! the restaurant offered a very good menu at attainable prices. I can highly recommend

          this hotel.

          Bumming around Palma

Spent a day wandering around Palma... The city is quite large, and so I stuck mostly to the old areas of 'tourist' interest. There are churches, a cathedral, plazas and museums all over the place, but being there on a Sunday meant that I was limited in what I could see and do. Many thinks remain lose forgave reduced hours on Sundays, something that seems to be less common in North America but still prevalent in many other places. Being that I prefer architecture over spending ...

So there was an option to get in a last ride before heading out Saturday to Plama... I opted for the shorter (50km) ride as the other option was 95km! This shorter version was set to ensure that folks who had early afternoon flights would be able to make them... Or those who didn't feel like doing another full ride could also participate :) Now, being a shorter ride, I thought perhaps it might be a flatter ride... Not a chance! ...

You know those days that you wake up and say 'seriously, who peed in my cornflakes' but you haven't even gotten to breakfast yet? Yep, that was today... Toted as one of the best rides on the island, the slated 85km costal route covers some beautiful landscapes and several challenging hills. Mallorca is a stunning island if you like picturesque villages, beautiful coastlines, acres of almond and citrus orchards... Not to mention the ...

Aptly named, this mostly flat route has the bonus of stopping at a well-known restaurant for fantastic cakes at the midpoint. I'll be honest, while it was nice to be back on the bike again, visiting the shop and seeing how much pride the creator of these goodies had with her wares... And the joy in parsing them up for people to consume was a close second. Did I mention that at 95km in length, this ...

... complete with six-packs of boisterous middle-aged German men. The place was teeming with German tourists mostly in groups of six, (a few men were even decked out in lederhosen) - far more that we expected. I had always thought Mallorca was popular with Brits. We had a small room (with patio) on the ground floor of the family run Hotel Garau only 50m from the ...
