Chop Gate to Blakey Ridge

... lost count of the number of howdo's and orright's as we passed folk! We walked over the gently rolling Urra, Farndale, and High Blakey Moors, one massive expanse of wind swept heather. What a lonely eerie place it would be in the winter mist. Along the way we saw grouse, grazing sheep spread sparsely, a few rabbits and small birds. In no time at all we were approaching Blakey and our B&B. The Lion Inn has been a welcome site to weary travellers for nearly 500 ...

... 2/3's along the stage we stopped at the busy Lord Stones Cafe and had cream teas. This place was a bit of a surprise in the middle of nowhere. ... our booked time. The food was average and presented in a pond of gravy. I think the cook was trying to somehow tie in the farm yard theme we had had that day with the evening meal. Thoughtful but it didn't work. We decided to skip dessert and headed back to the B&B to watch the tennis. In the morning we started out in bright sunshine. This continued all day with a refreshing ...

... of barley on slippery clay paths, and in and around dozens of farms, farm gates, farm mud/dung. The smell of manure was overwhelming for much of the time. We arrived at the tiny village of Danby Wiske at 4.30pm. Although not the longest of walks we were glad to get there. Walking on roads made my heels sore. We left our smelly muddy boots at the door on some newspaper and made our way to our room to rest and shower before ...
