Catania - Our Last Day

Up before the sun to catch the early boat into Milazzo. We were lucky, this one didn't change anywhere although we had several stops so we'd stay onboard. It was cool in the morning but we were greeted by a beautiful sunrise as we waited for the boat. We were able to see the beautiful black lava beach of the island and could even see the smoke from eruptions on the volcano. Onboard we were treated to a bit of a rough sea. As the boat cut through the waves, we were pitched up and then we'd sma...

... Taormina for a better view of Etna than from Catania and to check out the town.
We foolishly thought it would be easy to walk the 850m from the train station to the town, but didn't count on most of it being some ridiculously steep gradient. Got there in the end, but bus would have been the better option...

Yowza! Some cool stats.

But here's the thing I think is coolest. (See photo to the left.) I assumed most of these countries were highlighted because I've been meeting fellow travelers, but then I realized there are some countries here where I haven't met people from. Which means random people in random parts of the ...

All by myseeeeeelf.

... for me. But then I rang and rang and rang and rang and nothing. A little bakery backs up to the alley of the building. Two guys came out on their balcony and said (or at least I think they said, in Italian) "Bang on the door! Ring all the bells! Knock louder!" I told them that I had and then repeated my actions for them to see. They grabbed a cordless phone and the younger regazzo came down to dial the phone number of Gianni. (I was staying at Gianni House.) Anyway, apparently because ...

... might start having to get used to again) before heading to the park to try and get a view of Mount Etna through the clouds and to eat our purchases from the market. From there we made our way down to the Piazza Del Duomo, a UNESCO World Heritage site. We tried to go to the botanic gardens but this was shut and then sadly for us so was our favourite pastry shop, yes that's right we have been here a day and we already have a favourite pastry shop.

Mount Etna Lives On

... an emotional bunch. In fact, they pride themselves on their emotions, their passion.

This emotional bent is also apparent by the many idols – statues of Mary, churches, looming dominance of God, crosses nearly everywhere you look. A sign of devotion as part of the Italian Culture.

Refugio

We stayed at a Refuge on Mount Etna – menu scant.

Killing Catania and Seeing Sicily

... so I finally had to remind our waitress. They brought it out and it was almost like stuffed squid, and in Mike and Lauren's opinion not very good. A big bummer, Mike called it. Greg and Claudio, a fellow wide receiver said they come by to have a drink and met us at the restaurant once we finished. They gave Mike his cell phone, then they took us to a cracking nightspot were we had a beer and talked. They are really nice guys. Mike was ready to fall asleep on ...

Catania + Mt Etna, Sicily remember kids, duck+cover

Day 133 - 134, 17th - 18th October 2006, Catania and Mt Etna, Sicily: remember kids, duck and cover No sleep ins for free campers, we were up early before anyone had the chance to harass us. After a few laps of the port and attempting to board the wrong ferry (we really should look at our tickets a little more closely) we were on the car ferry and on our way to Sicila! Our bellies were grumbling already with all the talk of Pasta con le sarde (Sicilian pasta with sardines), Cannoli ...
