    ... trying to scale the stone walls is called "ishiotoshi". These outlets were built into the east, west and north walls of the first and second floors of the watchtower. It is quite a majestic structure. The castle walls didn't look quite as steep as some we have seen, but their defence measures must have been quite successful as the castle claims to have never been damaged by war and is the only remaining castle in the Sarin area.

    ... up a main hall that was 48 meters (about 157 feet) tall, twice the height it is now. Other stories place the height of older versions of the main hall of Izumo Taisha at 96 meters (about 315 feet)! This latter story matches the myth that the shrine was said to have stretched all the way to the heavens. There was a very nice one-tenth scale model displaying what it might have looked like.

    ... one of the biggest in Japan. You need to take your shoes off when exploring the wooden interiors of the castle and the exhibition halls.
    We have strolled down the castle grounds, with cherry trees in bloom, walk around the samurai district and various shrines, temples and tea houses.     ... with a little bit of help, created some very nice pieces of Japanese pottery. Ethan was proclaimed the pottery king! After we did the pottery we were given special macha tea and Sakura sweet, wrapped in a leaf from a cherry blossom tree. They then gave us some of their pottery.
