Took the four hour river cruise between MopanHill Wharf and Yangshuo, downstream from Guilin. The most spectacular scenery originates in the Cat Mountains and flows 437 Km's north of Guilin to the West River. The heavily wooded steep slopes provide a spectacular landscape along the river. Today the water was fast flowing and muddy as we had experienced heavy rain but normally the water is crystal clear. Normally the water buffalo bathe in the water but ...

I woke up sluggish, but at least slept till 8am. YF was already busy washing and rinsing clothes, I wrang out a big pile of washing before breakfast.

We had a slightly odd breakfast, at least my omelette was nice. With it I had a very green cucumber juice. The coffee was still horrible compared with Beijing but I needed to drink it anyway.

My favourite sale item on the mountain was honey - crisp rock honey hacked off the hive as you watch and packaged ...

... Caves on the outskirts of town. We had more success here: the caves are pretty incredible, and we spent much longer than we originally thought there. We were lucky enough to tag along with an older Canadian couple, whose tour guide was speaking in English (advanced geological terms weren't covered during the studying in Shanghai). We found out that this cave had been used as a hideout for civilians during times of conflict for hundreds of years, and its existence wasn't really revealed ...

... When we reached the docks in Yangshou the sellers were all getting ready with their stalls for the next lot of boats arriving. They were not really interested in us anymore which was nice. We did a bit more paddling on some of the stepping stones and then went for a look around the town. That night we went a light show which we had booked through the hotel. This used the mountains and the river as a natural theatre and the show was directed by the same guy that did ...
