Dubai, like Vegas...only more Expensive!

... last time I was here. I kept two hundred dollar bills in my pocket in case I got caught. Great dessert bar. You can land you chopper on the roof and walk to your table, You can also look down and see the Palm Island development, big beyond comprehension. Scores of hotels, hundreds of big houses, all built on a manmade island in the Gulf.

Tomorrow...Return to Africa!

... until the 15th, but the rumour among the old staff that it might not be until the end of the month. As is the way here. It may take some getting used to.

I'm including some picture of the Al Ain Oasis. It's beautiful! Al Ain has 7 Oases, but this one is the largest. I only snapped a few pictures because I'm not too used to the heat yet, but I plan on taking more when it's a little cooler.

Where are all the camels?

... about a subject, etc. Should be interesting... Also going to be difficult is the fact that we have to follow their teaching methodologies and practices. This wouldn't be too hard, except for the fact that it goes against everything we learned in Canada.

I have not yet seen a camel. I've seen a statue of one, and a chocolate one at the airport, but there is a surprising lackage of camels, considering this is a desert. The closest thing I saw however was a cow, but you'll ...

Do i look like a drug dealer?

... but it is safe to say that i was mightily ****** off. On leaving that room i was taken to a table where several customs officals went through my main bag with a fine toothcomb. I realised that i had some pirate DVD's in my bag that were wrapped up in a black big bag. When they found this bag it did look very dodgy and they got very excited and were dissapointed to see it was only DVD's. In the ned they let me go but it ...

Desert Safari Quadbike Crashes & Camels

... Our shows marked the onset and finale of the event, which spanned five days, so we had time in between to relax and enjoy as well as rehearse. The guys running the agency that brought us over are really really cool. They took us on a totally wild desert safari on one of the days off, as well as for a relaxing bathe in the healthy hot springs near Al Ain on another afternoon. They were so hospitable and I'd love to plug their agency but will settle for saying a big ...

... sight-seeing thrown in. First to arrive were Cathy and Nigel, now residing in London, on the 12th of Dec. Chuck, Julie and Gracie Bradford arrived on the 14th from Beijing and within moments of touch down were crammed into the Demblon 4WD to meet up with the Hewett convoy on the road to Al Ain, a desert oasis city of some 450,000 people about 2 hrs drive from Dubai on the Omani border, by the Hajar mountains. Eleven of us in 2 ...

Market day in Al Ain

... here are closed on Mondays. If only I'd, you know, read my guide book a little closer. Anyways, the first was a visit to the camel souk. Yes, the market for camels. I didn't see a lot of trading, so much as standing or sitting around and discussing... camels, I suppose. Before I even put my vehicle in park, I was being grabbed by a guy who wanted to lead me around with my camera. I did, which was sort of dumb, since he was a classic tourist trapper. I wound up paying him too ...

Dubai to Beijing

... enough it was time to get on the plane to Yantai, my final destination for the next four months. Baggage went smoothly and we were on the tiny plane in no time. The two hour flight was where I experienced my first sleep in China, was great, it came with a neck cramp and a missed snack but it was all good. I was in Yantai, ready to kick it with shaolin monks and random Chinese people who still regarded foreigners as strange alien creatures, especially brown bearded ones.

... or water taxis) go across Dubai Creek for only 1 dirham, or about $0.33. They only go when they are filled with people and cross the creek in five to ten minutes, depending on the route. They where a great, cheap, fast way to cross and see the creek area...with traffic congestion a similar trip by car can take over an hour in rush hour. I'm not sure what will happen to the Abras when the new metro system opens up in a couple years though.
