So when I was in town, I arranged for a taxi to pick me up from my guest house at 16:00 and drive me the two hours to Mettupayalam - in plenty of time to catch the 19:45 train to Chennai. ... could have been in any English village. There's also a lake where you can rent boats - the place is overrun with Indian tourists by the coachload, and this is off-peak.
One of the main reasons I wanted to come though was for the Thread Garden. The Lonely Planet says 'your love of the Thread Garden depends on your love of irony and kitsch...' Sounds up my street. ...
