Our sleeper bus pulled into Hoi An at some unearthly hour after a patchy sleep having had to sit through cheesey Vietnamese music performances on the TV. The sleeper bus is great, but you are often prodded and herded on like cattle. Also, they lock the toilet and give you no water as they can't be ***** cleaning the toilet all the time. We stayed at the Grassland hotel where the bus dropped us off. Actually we decided we weren't going to stay there on first impression as it is quite fancy and...
Hoi An, Vietnam faffThe night before Caroline and Lorraine had convinced me to leave Hue and go to Hoi An with them. So on Saturday the 15th of September I tried to book a ticket for the same bus as they were were on, but I could not. I did manage to get on another bus through my hotel. One of the girls gave me their mobile phone so that we could stay in touch and to arrange to meet somewhere in Hoi An. My bus left at 1:30pm and it only took 4 hours to Hoi An. We did stop along the way for something to eat and ...
Hoi An, Vietnam ger1Day 1 Before taking off for Halong Bay, we had bought the train tickets to Hoi An, departing at 7PM. Well, the train experience wasn't much different than in India, it was a bumpy/noisy ride on an untidy train, where we even got our own resident mouse to keep us company in our compartment for the whole night. I think I only slept a couple of hours. Day 2 Beach at last!
To avoid the "tourists" early start 6:30 to the ruins at My Son - which was nice and peacful to look round (see photos)
My Son, Vietnam pandacourtisA long bus trip (on the open tour bus) arrived in Hoi An to be coralled into the hotel - will try and escape the open tour circus in Dalat. Hoi an is a much more relaxing experience - no traffic in some streets so Mo now feels a little bit safer away from the crazy Vietnamese moped drivers when wlking around the old town.
Hoi An, Vietnam pandacourtisWe left Hue in the afternoon for Hoi An. We stayed at the Grassland hotel, right were the bus stopped, of course they get commission but we didn't care, it looked super nice and it was, the nicest place we'd stayed at so far. $15 a night. The restaurant food was gross though, and by now I've pretty much summed up our opinion of Vietnamese food as just stuff you put in your stomach so you don't die. We haven't had one single dish thats delicious, some have been ok, edible, but far from great!!...

... was really beautiful. I then took a closer look at some of their duffle coats which were a bit of a trend in Hoi An at the time. I tried one on and had to have one. It was just so Paddington bear and reminded me of when we dressed Ben up in Granny’s Paddington bear doll’s clothes when he was about 2. So I got a coat made in charcoal with hot pink silk piping and lining. It was ridiculous trying to try on a coat in that kind of heat but it was worth it in the end. So my being ...
Hoi An, Vietnam ciaradoonerush... interesting places! What is more interesting tho is that in the 3 days we were gone, we missed a tyhpoon that gripped Hoi An and surrounding areas depriving them of power and putting their towns underwater.

The destruction we witnesed on the way back up was nothing to be frivilous about but you have to admit, we certainly played our luck of the Irish card on this trip.

Hoi An, Vietnam niallandnicHoi An is a cool place and not just the weather (less humid here, but that may be because it rains a lot) - it is a smaller town - where you can stoll around. look at the river the Japanese covered bridge, the long boats in the water and the low lying bulidings.
However it is also the place to get some clothes made, and after initiately stating i would not get anything - i succumbed.
Yep i bought myself my own custom made trainers ...
Hoi An, Vietnam swallowp... owner, in the least would be to turn to your customer when giving back change. And even better if you thank her while handing back change with both hands. But she was the deviant from the norm. Most Vietnamese are extremely grateful for your business.

Now back to the coconut juice.

I’ve had fresh coconut juice before. Usually in a few sips the coconut is drained. But this one was some kind super coconut on steroids. It must ...
